Kevin Wooten, 23
Died Dec. 25, 2010
Kevin Wooten, a 23-year-old black man, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles police officer Saturday, Dec. 25, in the 9900 block of Grape Street in Watts, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
LAPD officers were called to the Jordan Downs Housing Projects just before 4 a.m. after a report of an assault with a rifle. The officers were near an open field behind the housing area when they saw an occupied SUV adjacent to the field, police said.
While dealing with the people in that vehicle, they saw Wooten riding toward them on a bicycle. He was holding a rifle and ignored their commands, prompting them to shoot, police said.
Wooten was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to coroner's records, he died from several gunshot wounds.
Police say an assault rifle was recovered at the scene. An investigation into the shooting has been launched, as is typical with officer-involved shootings.

This must be the law-abiding citizen that was on a bike, riding around with an assault rifle at 4am.

Yes, Meck it was, but you can not shoot a rifle while riding a bike. You are the true leva.

Yes you can shoot a rifle from a bike. Wooten was a long time member of the criminal street gang Grape Street. He was a thug and a criminal.

But yet, that is your name. Learn the meaning first, Einstein.

— Leva .... "Yes ..... but you can not shoot a rifle while riding a bike."
One hand on the handle bars and one hand on the pistol grip of the rifle.

i'm confussed on reality.. your out at 4am with a rifle........WHY would you even ride towards an officer???????????? Even more confused....WHY would you be out with a rifle?

Hey "Meck" , it is clearly that you use a nickname as well. Please educate all of us, what does Leva mean?

As i asked in a diffrent post, was he trying to shoot down santa's raindeers. Some people thought process are unbeliveable. We know K-loc was about to do dirt or already had. and the people who say they knew him and r to stupid to admit he was up to no good u need to get on ur bike get ur rifle start rideing around the JD's at 4:00am. then maybe u will see how insane it was.

I noticed Syscom3 from the OC and Meck, are the same troll. 50 years old, trolling the La Times and doesn't even reside in Los Angeles to speak. Too bad La Times loves to post his stuff, twice while leaving out our sincere educated comments. People love to jump to conclusions when they hear, Watts, projects, rifles and black man. Remember Sean Bell, and the cops went scott free? Maybe this was justified, but can't assume.
This should be investigated by an outside department. Very hard to shoot a RIFLE from a bicycle, believing a story without any actual facts, is dangerous. I'm a recreational shooter, this sounds like trigger happy cops again. What would cops do if they see a man with a rifle swung over his shoulder coming out the gun store? Shoot him? Long arms aren't illegal to open carry or conceal in a vehicle as long as it's unloaded. The rounds could of easily gone off after he fell. There are three sides to a story, the dead mans side, the cops side... and the truth.

Maybe he did have the rifle how ever how can u get shot in the back and end up with ur face puahed into the dirt while biking " torwards " police certain thing dont add up. And im sure justice will not be served

Yes he did have the rifle and was taking it to a different location for a hunting trip that morning. He was ordered to put the gun down which he did and was still shot. The police are trying to cover this up because the witnesses that were there was taking to the police station and told not to tell the family anything. Its was 4 days before they allowed the family to identify the body because the "Police" said there was an investigation going on. Aren't all murders under investigation still the family is able to identify the victim. Something is wrong with this killing. The family only knew it was him by hearsay the people who were at the scene at the time of the murder by cop. People speak just off of speculation not know the full story. RIP Kevin you will be truly missed.

Montana; Meck and I are two separate individuals. Perhaps you've noticed he has his writing style and words he likes to use, and I have my own. I will not confirm or deny where I live and work other than to say it's in Southern Cal.
And how can I be a troll? I've been a frequent commenter on this blog for over three years using the same name and e-mail address.
As for the deceased, good thing he was stopped before he could use this weapon. No one was hurt from his exceptionally dangerous activity.
Dec. 30, 2010 at 12:43 p.m.
— Justice .... he was going on a hunting trip with the weapon and was just transporting it to another location?
Yeah, he had an assault rifle to go duck hunting! That's it! And he forgot his gun case too. All at 4 in the morning!
Lets face it, the only hunting he was up to was for other people. He was a dangerous individual that morning. And there sure weren't witnesses at that hour who truthfully saw anything.

It's funny how every one has a side to the story (speculation). Although none of you were there. Or better yet none of you knew him SMH.

If we just use our COMMON sense (which is not all that common now a days) it does not take a brain surgeon to figure this out @ what its worth... and we proberly have many of Kevins grape street homeys on this blog trying to taint the obvious! All of the accusatons your trying to make in his defense absolutely make no sense! and @ 4am w/ a gun? really. Yeah right.

It's amazing that you people can make excuses for this character...he was up to no good and luckily the police were there to stop that action...society never changes just the excuses...you can make all the excuses in the world but the bottome line is that at 4am anyone caught carrying an assault rifle should be arrested and if they dont comply with an order they should be shot down....I lived in Compton for over 20 years and I've seen these stupid acts over and over...I moved on and left all that to the ones that love to see that mess...this is why crime in certain communities can not and will not decrease...Watts being at the top of the list because all the people in the community make excuses for the illegal acts until it affects their family....

It's amazing the degree to which some people happily tolerate the most heinous acts of violence in their own communities, but condemn the police for every action taken.

Hunting? This Kevin person was going hunting with an assault rifle? My father was a hunter and would leave early in the morning with his friends in a CAR with their hunting rifles locked away in the trunk of their CAR until they got to wherever hunters go.
Uh Justice? The nurse is here with your medication.

answer this one important question was k-loc a felon, not one of his peeps has made a comment on his police record and why he continued to screw up.
Jan. 3, 2011 at 11:34 a.m.

See this is why whenever i drop my friend off at his girls house on juniper, i just pull over to the curb instead of driving up inside that parking lot! Its a whole lot of Faking and Fronting going on around them parts (even the smokers/bums parade around like Barnee the Dinosaur)! o well R.I.P reguardless to the young man. I guess the line @ popeyes will be a little less crowded on 2-Piece tuesdays from now on...SMH

Kevin was a funny guy. He always made me laugh - always with a smile.
Regardless if he was in a gang, had a weapon....what's done is done and Kevin is no longer with us (in body but, he is in spirit.).
I know how hard it is for his children and family, especially in Christmas. It's hard to believe that's almost a year.
