Jose Vera-Eugenio, 21 [Updated]

Died Jan. 17, 2011

Jose Vera-Eugenio, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, Jan. 17, in the 500 block of West 98th Street in Vermont Vista, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[For the record: An earlier version of this post, which was based on the original report, identified Vera-Eugenio as a Latino in his 20s.]

Vera-Eugenio was seated in a car with two other people about 9:15 p.m. when at least one person walked up and fired at the car, said LAPD Criminal Gang & Homicide Det. Scott Smith. All three occupants were hit.

Authorities were called and Vera-Eugenio was pronounced dead at the scene. According to coroner's records, he was shot several times in the head.

The two other victims were taken to a hospital where they are being treated for their wounds.

Two men were arrested in connection with the shooting, Smith said, but he declined to provide their names citing the ongoing investigation. They have yet to be charged.

The alleged shooters are gang members, and the shooting is believed to be gang-related, he said.

Its very sad when things like this happen. Specially when the victim is one of ur friends. Which was the case with this 20 year old latino. I knew the victim and I'm proud to say that he wasnt no gangbanger. Just a young father of a 1 year old that was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Rest in peace vera.

And the beat goes on!

Just walk up to a car and start shooting.

I just don't understand the mindset of some people.

First of all Rest In Peace VERA.And much blessings to your loved ones.
OK just because we are brown or black does not mean we are gang related.Thats always an excuse for these cops to close a case sooner than possible.Should we always look at the cops and remind ourselves of the RAmpart division.should we look at whites and remind ourselves of the skin heads & the k k k . J Vera Was not gang affiliated ..

Even if the victims were not gangsters, all it takes is for the suspect(s) to be one, and it's considered gang-related. So this incident is pretty much gang-related. Sad, the way these morons go around shooting everything and everyone. I know you should be able to be anywhere at anytime without being in fear. But really, they should've played it smart, and not sit in a parked car, at that time, in that neighborhood.

Why can't these young kids/adults fight like real men with there fists. So quick to pick up a gun! I call that "COWARD". Now my cuzin and my nephew are left without a husband/father for no reason just because some lil pricks can't fight there battles with there fists. I hope those two guys rott in hell while sitting behind bars!

I can't imagine having to live in a war zone of killer children with my family. I'm curious to know why everybody in these communities don't suffer from PTSD.

So thats it? Wrong place at the wrong time? When is this gonna end?

I haven't posted in a several months, I come back to see the same thing, young men getting cut down like business as usual in 2011 like 2010.

Everyone brags on democracies but they tend to have high rates of violent crime. Bet you these gangbangers wouldn't pull that crap in China, Singapore, or Saudi Arabia. The problem would be dealt with quickly and permanently. But I also agree that rounding them all up will just create vacuums that a younger generation or immigrants will step in and fill. Why not attack the root cause - poor uneducated unskilled unmarried women having too many children?
