Shoichi Joe Minesaki, 19

Died June 6, 2011

Shoichi Joe Minesaki, a 19-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Monday, June 6, in the 6800 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard in North Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[Editor's note: An earlier version of this post, based on preliminary information from the coroner's office, identified the victim as a Latino in his 20s.]

Police arrived to the area at 1:30 a.m. in response to a call of multiple shots fired and found Minesaki crumpled on the ground next to his bicycle, said Los Angeles police spokesman Bruce Borihanh.

Minesaki was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

A sheriff's deputy in the area chased a white van seen leaving the area, and called in a Los Angeles police helicopter patrol when he lost it, Borihanh said. The van was located a few blocks from the shooting site but the people inside had vanished.

Officers were going door to door questioning residents in an attempt to find the suspects, he said.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800-222-8477).

Sigh... Gotta be pretty incompetent to lose a large white van while you're behind the wheel of a squad car... then again, nothing surprises me when it comes to the Sheriffs Department.

"JOE" Was my youngest son's childhood friend. They lost touch and he turned up again. My son had been helping him. Joe was a nice person, not
into trouble. I am so proud of my son for being selfless, but he always been so. The shooting was senseless, and those responsibile will be caught and that freedom Joe had as he was just riding his bike will be taken so they may live the rest of their lives in a cell. The choices we make come with accountability.

R.I.P Joe. I knew him since we were 12, I'm glad I was able to see him a few weeks before this horrible incident happened. I know you're enjoying eternal bliss now and you were a great friend, happy I have a picture of you to remember you by. These "people" will be caught! Goodbye, my friend, Joe.
