Mary Sternal, 90

Died July 29, 2010

Mary Sternal, a 90-year-old white woman, was shot and killed Thursday, July 29, in the 14000 block of Palawan Way in Marina del Rey, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said a relative went to Sternal's home and found her shot.

Authorities were called and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Sternal had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, according to coroner's records.

It appeared the shooting was a murder-suicide, Winter said. He did not have any more information about the case.

The Times has contacted investigators to get more details about the incident and will provide an update as soon as possible.

Six reader comments about Mary Sternal

I do not know Mary but to almost live to be a century old and then die from being shot? Is truly disheartening. Ms. Sternal rest in peace.

Whats the story about this?

Not often a defenseless 90 year old is murdered.

Do you read the LA Times or just the homicide report? It was a murder-suicide.

It says they left notes, maybe it was the type of thing where he felt he was relieving her suffering and he didn't want to be without her. If she were truly able to leave a note it sounds to me like she was aware of what was about to happen and probably okay with it. Not every person is a spry character into their 90's, you know.

This happened a few doors down from me. They were an adorable, very nice - elderly couple. She had recently taken ill. He always helped her. Apparently, there was a note that family members read. (however, I don't see where it says that in this article - as someone just posted). Most here believe it was a sympathy incident. Some even think it was romantic. However, we didn't realize it was with a gun. We thought it was pills. No one gave us the full story yet.
