Melvin James, 54, a black man, was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest at 4234 S. 3rd Ave. in the Crenshaw area, and died at 5:48 a.m. Wednesday, May 2. He was visiting friends inside a building at 4200 3rd Ave. in LAPD's Southwest Division about 5 a.m. Three suspects burst in and shot James, then fled the scene.
