Died Feb. 15, 2011

Miguel Sanchez Jr.

Miguel Sanchez Jr., a 21-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, hours after he was shot by an off-duty officer in the 1500 block of West 224th Street in Harbor Gateway, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

An off-duty policeman parked his personal car near Denker Avenue and West 224th Street on Feb. 14 about 11:45 p.m. when he saw Sanchez running toward him with a gun, according to an LAPD news release.

Authorities said Sanchez pointed the gun at the policeman, at which point the officer-involved shooting occurred.

Paramedics were called and Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The off-duty officer, who has been with the department for three years and seven months, was not hurt during the incident. Police are withholding the officer's name because there are outstanding assailants connected to the case.

A review of the officer-involved shooting will be conducted by the LAPD Force Investigation Division, as well as the police chief, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners and the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, officials said.

Nine reader comments about Miguel Sanchez Jr.

Miguel was a very good person and did not deserve to go out like this. Just because he pointed guns at people does not make him a bad person. He never pulled the trigger.

Jose. Yes, because he pointed guns at people does not make him a bad person, however what was his motive? To scare or to rob? And maybe if he did pull the trigger, he would be alive today! In the end, it was his bad choice to pull the gun at that person at that time. Did he deserve to die over this? NO! But his actions had consequences and no one else is to blame. RIP Miguel.

Jose - "Just because he pointed guns at people does not make him a bad person. He never pulled the trigger."

That has got to be one of the most ignorant comments I've heard. So only if he pulled the trigger, only then he'd be a bad person? I really don't understand your logic. What good person pulls a gun on someone?? If you're pulling a gun on someone other than to protect yourself from someone shooting you, you should expect to be shot and possibly killed.
Sounds to me that he picked the wrong person to try and rob and paid the ultimate price.

— LA Resident ..... regarding the comment from Jose ..... this is what society has to deal with. For many of these gang enablers, violence is the norm. They have no moral bearing in which to judge people, and come up with the strangest excuses for criminal and sociopathic behavior.

Once again Syscom3 strikes when it's a minority....however I'm not the only one that feels this way...I've been sending quotes from others that Syscom3 chooses not to respond to when he is challenged on white crime....Here's an example "Syscom3, you indicated 11.2% of homicides are whites in LA County. Considering Whites are a minitority in LA County it is not as rare as you think it is. Also, you always choose to bash on the Hispanics and Blacks who have been killed. On the other hand, you have posted only two to three comments when it involves Whites." (Jag)... Syscom3 the racist but obsessed with minorities did not have a retort....TELL US WHY SYSCOM3

An analysis of the 2010 census data for LAC and the four years of homicide numbers as reported by this blog show the following (numbers rounded off):

Asian - 14% of the population with 3% of the homicides

White - 28% of the population with 11% of the homicides

Black - 9% of the population with 32% of the homicides

Latino - 48% of the population with 52% of the homicides.

To satisfy your definition of semantics, I will say that whites or Asians getting murdered isn't rare. Just infrequent.

There is also the question of why I don't "bash" white criminals. Long time readers of this blog know I do so when Caucasian criminals end up on the blog. It isn't my fault that its quite an infrequent occurrence. So by your logic, you call me a racist for not commenting on people who haven't been killed yet.

"TELL US WHY SYSCOM3"? The numbers speak for themselves. White and Asian gang crime in LAC is rare and doesn't happen very often. Not my fault.

Syscom3, great stats! Would you mind sharing the same numbers nation wide?
