Modesto Casiano, 24

Died Sept. 23, 2011

Modesto Casiano, a 24-year-old Latino, was shot and killed during a robbery Friday, Sept. 23, in the 1500 block of Rosecrans Boulevard in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Officers arrived at Paisano Meats about 6:30 a.m. to find Casiano shot a few dozen yards from the market, said Lt. Steve Prendergast of the Gardena Police Department. He died at the scene.

During the investigation, it was learned the meat market owner was confronted by Casiano, who was allegedly robbing the store, officials said.

"There was an exchange of gunfire and the suspect was shot," Prendergast said.

A shopper in the store was also wounded but was in stable condition at a hospital, Prendergast said.

The owner, whose name was not released, was not arrested in the case.

Anyone with additional information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
