Moises Castro, 25

Died March 29, 2010 at 1:45 p.m.

Moises Castro, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, March 29, in the 2500 block of Michigan Avenue in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Det. Jose Ramirez of the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division said Castro was confronted by three male suspects in an alley about 1:05 p.m. The men exchanged words and one of the suspects produced a gun, shooting Castro in the upper body.

Authorities were called and the victim was taken to County USC Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Ramirez said.

Shortly after the shooting, officers received information that the assailants were hiding out in an apartment. Police arrived at the apartment, interviewed everyone inside and arrested the three suspects in connection with Castro's death, Ramirez said.

In the felony complaint provided by the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, the assailants have been identified as Jonathan Gutierrez, a 20-year-old Latino; David Contreras, a 17-year-old Latino; and Andrew Garcia, a 16-year-old Latino.

All three have been charged with one count of murder, said a spokesman for the district attorney's office. Gutierrez is being held at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic, and the two teenagers are in a juvenile detention facility.

condolences to the deseased family. I grew up on those same streets, boyle heights is not a safe neighborhood for teenagers and young adult men. I have been fortunate to survive two stabbings and being shot at on several occations all in one year. there are alot of law abiding citizens, but way too many bad apples in the barrio around brooklyn and soto. that neighborhood needs to be razed, and rebuilt with parks, new commercial strip and single family residences. too many apartments, overcrowded.

Word on the streets is the "victim" was crossing out with a spray can a Breed Street gang graffiti. The "victim" claimed ELA and for that he was shot. I know it must be hard for the family members, but he played by the sword and die by the sword. No sympathy in me end.

When I was much younger, my family and I lived on Breed Street for a few months. I remember we bought a used car. It was new to us and new in the neighborhood. The morning after we purchased it, the words 'BREED ST' were scribed on the hood in huge letters. I believe we left a week later. Ugly neighborhood.

— Meck
March 23, 2012 at 9:07 a.m.

— J.C, he was a thug just like the same ones who shot him. Being in a gang is not a game. It's very common for family members and friends of the victim to sugar coat their love ones life and are in denial about their gang involvement. If he was not in a gang why was he crossing out another gang and claiming a hood? It's ashame this young men are killing each other for pretending to be tough and claiming a stupid gang.

— Zeta

— Absolutlykrazy ..... for many of these gangsters and their network of enablers; the irrational has become the normal. The absurd has become a way of life. The unnatural the natural way of life.

And they get upset when someone shows no sympathies for when one of their kind gets killed.

— syscom3
March 23, 2012 at 1:04 p.m.

Absolutlykrazy, you misunderstood my message. I myself dislike gangs and I have no sympathy for victims that are gangsters. I agree with syscom3 posting.

— Facts
March 26, 2012 at 3:57 p.m.

Meck, so now we know why you hate and dislike all gangsters. You are a smart man and you should not assume all Hispanics and Blacks are gangsters like your buddy Syscom3 does.

— Neighbor
March 26, 2012 at 4:02 p.m.

I don't assume. It's just that in Los Angeles county, most gangsters are black or Hispanic. I would like to see this same report but about Orange County. BTW, I'm Mexican if you're wondering.

March 28, 2012 at 10:57 a.m.

Man u guys needs shut up u didn't know him he didn't bang he was just a nice Guy on his way to work and he got killed for nothing and I hope the ppl who did it die a slow painful death and I get to watch

— <3
March 29, 2012 at 10:50 a.m.

— Neighbor; provide the direct quotes where I said all blacks or latino's were gangsters?

Once again, I am accused of this and that, with no proof.

Long time readers of this blog know I have said on multiple occasions that my fondest wish is for "the residents of these killing field neighborhoods to have good economic prospects, good schools, and the leading cause of death is old age"

— syscom3
March 29, 2012 at 4:42 p.m.

To: "facts", zeta and syscom3

The Victim had barely moved in to that side of town. He lived there for less than 6 months. He was not a gangster nor a thug like u claim! N he wouldnt claim any streets that dont even belong to anyone! He was raised better than that! He was a hard working man! In fact he was on his way to work when them stupid A-Holes took his life! Now there are 4 kids left without a father.. Tough when they're in the age full of questions..
Hope justice is made soon! Even tho prison isnt even close to what they deserve!!!

— Widow
March 29, 2012 at 11:47 p.m.

Widow, <3, sorry to hear about your loss. I don't believe in anyone being killed regardless of the circumstances. In the LA Weekly News the victim is identified as a member of a tagging crew. Police stated that tagging may have been the cause of this incident. I would think a man with four children will be mature enough to leave the street life style behind em.

March 30, 2012 at 12:43 p.m.

-Zeta,
Whay are you talking like if you knew him and what happen!!!Moises was a family man and a man of he's word with 4 kids left behind!!!!!!I know he wouldn't claim a gang to be to tough, he knew better and was raise right. NOT no low life like you talking smack!!! I wish i knew ur name and face!!zeta! And aint no denial or sugar love like you said punk!! pure LOVE and HATE to you and the corwards Gang that did it!!! I know and knew he would NEVER cross the line and never back down to low life like you!!! and crossing out another gang is BS. Trial started A@@@@@E and these cowards were there to kill any soul!! So zeta!!!!!!!!! KEEP YOUR DUMB THOUGHTS TO YOUR SELF OR WHO EVER THE F@@K YOU ARE!!!!

Fact
I'm glad to hear you feel the same way.Sorry for the mistake....
It's a shame that most of these kids will never live long enough to become adults. There is a BIG world outside the streets of LA. If they used the Brain That god gave them as hard as they are trying to control the streets we would have Doctors & Laywers

Three Breed Street Gang Members were convicted for the murder of this victim. The fact is the person who is actually responsible for the death of this young fellow is out and about. Three young men will spend the rest of their lives in jail for something they did not do. This is how our judical system works. Their job is to prosecute and blame someone without getting their facts together. I don't support gangs at all but the fact remains that three innocent persons were wrongfully convicted.

— NoJustice
Oct. 7, 2012 at 2:23 a.m.

-NO Justice

How do you know they were from breed gang???

— huh??
Oct. 16, 2012 at 8:28 p.m.

I know all 3 guys who were convicted one of them a close friend of mine. Like No Justice said the person responsible for the murder is out there. Maybe it makes the deceased's family feel a lil relieve by knowing these supposedly murders are behind bars but in reality the murderer is out there.

— Unknown
Nov. 11, 2012 at 9:24 p.m.

-Unknown, you are absolutely correct. I hope the jurors and the judge read these postings, but of course they will never go back for a retrial. For the victim's family they have the wrong guys and you need to know that and seek for real justice.

— Yeap
Nov. 13, 2012 at 9:40 p.m.

— Yeap ; — Unknown .... the people directly involved in the trial have a lot more information about what happened and who did it, than you do.

For you to claim that they convicted the wrong people without you having unimpeachable evidence is simple speculation and wishful thinking.

— syscom3
Nov. 14, 2012 at 6:41 p.m.

@ Unknown, has your friend told you, or ANYBODY ELSE who the shooter is? If he/you know the name and don't report it, what do you expect to change?

— BoxBob
Nov. 15, 2012 at 9:27 a.m.

Syscom3, here you are again supporting the judicial system that incriminates the innocent. The jurors were given a fake story and they bought it. The truth is the guy who killed this young fellow is out and about and three young kids have been sentenced to life. Trials are about convincing a bunch of jurors who don't have a life about twisting the facts of an event by all means. The guy responsible is not physically stable and the family of the victim probably already know it. To the family of Moises, the guys who have been charged with this murder tried taking the responsible person out. They did because they knew he screwed up.

— Truth
Nov. 17, 2012 at 10:17 a.m.

— Truth , then why didn't you testify at the trial?

Perhaps its because you are only speculating on who you think did it. And the only proof you have is a "feeling".

— syscom3
Nov. 17, 2012 at 9:27 p.m.

@NoJustice
I dont know if those in jail for the crime are guilty or innocent. What I do know is that in court, the defense and prosecuters have arguments. These arguments are not always based on truth. They are mostly based on who can tell the best story. That is what I was told by my instructor when I was in school studying to be a lawyer. I changed my major after that. Also there are people that are in jail for murder that did not do it. Lets go back a few years ago when a witness who was going to testify against a murderer was murdered herself. They put a youngman in La in jail for her murder. They just know it was him. He spent 5 months behind bars. If his wife had not remembered that he was at Dodgers staduim with there daughter at a game he would still be behind bars. Lucky for him they were taping curb your enthusiasm in he was found on tape in the crowd. Unfortunately life is not always fair.
