Oscar Morales, 21
Died May 27, 2010 at 4:10 p.m.
Oscar Morales, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police Thursday, May 27, in the 8300 block of Burnet Avenue in North Hills, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Officers responded to "a call for service involving a man with a history of suicide threats" at a house about 12:30 p.m., according to an LAPD news release.
When officers arrived, family members directed them to Morales, who was in the living room, police said.
The officers approached Morales, who they described as initially cooperative. According to the LAPD account, he then suddenly grabbed a fireplace poker and came at them, allegedly refusing to drop the poker. At that point, Officer Davis Giron, a 10-year LAPD veteran, shot Morales several times, according to an LAPD news release about the shooting.
Morales sustained several gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital, where he died at 4:10 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The LAPD Force Investigation Division responded to the shooting location and are conducting an inquiry into the officer-involved shooting.

Gosh!! LAPD is going on a shooting spree. How can they even sleep at night knowing they just took someone else's life away??

As a regular resident of Los Angeles County if I was to kill a person who has a fireplace poker and claimed that I fear for my life I guarantee you that I will still end up in jail. On the other hand, happy trigger cops get away with murder!

jag, did you know that getting hit over the head by a fireplace poker can be fatal?

How save r we from the LAPD???? Kill someone because they had fireplace poker and shot him in his torso when he has a leg somewhere else where he wouldve not lost his life!!!!!!! I bet these LAPD used to play video games and now that they actually have the weapons they find any excuse to kill... So what if I get drunk at home or a bar get violet are they goin to kill me too!!!!!! Im a hardworking woman responsible the same way this kid was and they just took his life... Also why is it mostly latinos, do these cops just assume from us Latinos that were the worst, they assume were gangster or why the killing so much Latino???

How many of you people know that people under the influence of certein types of drugs can become violent quite quickly and will be immune to pain?
And for those that think that the police should shoot for the leg or arm .... see my comment above. When someone is violent and armed, then the only appropriate response is to stop the individual.

syscom3, cops claim just about any object can be use as a weapon and if hit by one it can be fatal. When I lived in Boyle Heights, a young guy got killed by the cops because he had a broom!!! I lived in a bad neighborhood in my teen years and I didn't get involved in gangs and I was fortunate to get my graduate degree and yet I still fear cops when I see one. I witnessed so many injusticies and cops played dirty, as shocking as it may sound to you, and when I read a story like this I'm disgusted.

Jag, was the guy Latino?? Syscom3 Oscar was my coworker in order to get this job u get drug test and I know he didn't used any drugs!!!!!! I know of a crime scene story this white guy had gun I repeat a GUN not a broom or fireplace poker he didn't get shot, even the squat got involved!! I wonder why? He wasn't brown enough!!!!

Jag-
I'm sure you did. For people like you, "injustices" consist of just about anything, including arresting people. If someone brandishes a knife or gun and the cops respond accordingly, it's an "injustice". If someone flees or resists arrest and they respond accordingly, it's an "injustice". It's pretty simple...if you don't want problems with the police, don't act aggressively, don't brandish a weapon, and do as you're told. Pretty simple, really.

This seems to be the prime type of incident where an officer is trained to use a non-lethal weapon such as a taser, which has a safe firing distance and can easily incapacitate the subject. You'd think the family must be pretty upset to call the cops in there for this sort of thing but then have the cops kill the guy instead.

Damn i feel so sorry for the family...they are the ones that called the police FOR HELP instead their loved one ends up getting murdered by these cops! And whatever happened with the use of tasers and why did he have to be shot all those times? REALLY THOUGH?? I will keep this in mind

Oscar was a student at No Valley Occupation Center. There is no reason his life should have to end when he was just in emotional turmoil. The cops could have shot his leg or used 3 men to suppress him. I find this arbitrary and ridiculous and immoral.

people if you are a minority, please don't call the police if you need help. all they are going to do is kill your love one. this is another example! LAPD are bad guys prentending to be good guys!

If you don't want the cops involved then clean up your neighborhood, clean up your house and keep your kids in check. If other kids have more influence on your children than you do, than you gotta toughen up or one day you will have the cops at your door.

SYSCOM3,OSCAR DIDN'T USE ANY TYPE OF DRUGS!!! But obviously U do!!!! How do U know that if a person is on drugs they become immune to pain? If thats true then I know U do!!! "TO PROTECT AND TO SERVE"? REALLY????? To me that only means cops are here to protect and serve THEMSELVES,to whatever they want!!
My daughter lost a terrific uncle, whom she LOVES AND MISSES SO MUCH!!!! Reese you and your family are constantly in my heart, thoughts and prayers on a daily!

SYSCOM3,OSCAR DIDN'T USE ANY TYPE OF DRUGS!!!
...... Do you have the toxicological report from the coroner?
But obviously U do!!!!
..... Among the more stupid comments I've seen in awhile.
How do U know that if a person is on drugs they become immune to pain?
.... Ever hear of PCP? Or meth?

It's obvious from the report and the family's call to the police that this young man had mental health issues. Unfortunately the young man was not on meds or choose not to take them. In any event, he threatened the police with deadly force, for which the police have the right to defend themselves. If the family couldn't get him to a hospital, why didn't they call for an ambulance and have medical personnel take care of him? Mental health issues need health responses. Perhaps that's a lesson the Hispanic community needs to learn so that no other of their sons or daughters feel a threat of police, but only the security of knowing medical help is on its way for them. That is how things are done in the USA.

Wow, listen to all this garbage! The police are called to the scene, and when they get there, family members direct the police over to Mr. Morales. Mr. Morales is initially cooperative and then suddenly grabs a fireplace poker WHICH IS DEFINITELY A LETHAL WEAPON YOU FOOLS and came at the police, refusing to put this LETHAL WEAPON down. What do you expect these cops to do? What would you do in the perhaps two or three seconds you have to save your own life from this menacing attack? You gonna try and grab it from his hands? Really? Shoot at his kneecaps? Come on. In a situation like that, it's life and death for everyone involved and you people are entirely unrealistic in your condemnation of the police actions here. It is a very sad incident, but this kind of situation isn't some reality show or game. There are mere seconds to stop the menacing attack and I'm glad at least it was the aggressor who was killed and not the first responders doing their sworn duties. Come on people.
