Died April 11, 2011

Oscar Vega, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, April 11, in the 1100 block of Temple Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[Editor's note: Long Beach police say Vega was found shot near Anaheim Street and Molino Avenue, which is less than a block from the location the coroner's office listed.]

Long Beach police found Vega with multiple gunshot wounds about 10 p.m., according to a police statement. Officers patrolling the area heard gunshots and located the victim.

Vega was taken by paramedics to St. Mary's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police do not have a description of a suspect or suspects. Detectives say the shooting is being investigated as gang-related.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call homicide Dets. Hugo Cortes or Peter Lackovic at (562) 570-7244. Callers can remain anonymous.

Sorry to hear about Oscar's tragic ending. I will remember his great smile waiting in line outside my classroom. It is a sad day for your fifth grade teacher.

All of us at Reid miss you so much Oscar. You were always the center of attention in Ms. Fesseha's class and I will always remember how all of the girls crushed on you. Dayeum can't believe its been a year I still remeber the day we posted up at vets drinkin some 40z chillin that day was the day I really got to talk to you and get to know u better I wasn't really close to you butt it still hurts knowing ur gone and nerver again will we kick it its a shame god had to take you early butt I guess everything happens for a reason.
