Paul Salazar, 31, a Latino man, was shot in the 15838 block of Fairgrove Avenue in Valinda at about 4:18 a.m.
People nearby heard the crack of a single gunshot, then saw men loading the wounded man into a car. It was the man's friends, apparently trying to get him to a hospital.
West Covina police pulled over the car, and called an ambulance. The man died at Queen of the Valley hospital. He may have been shot in a backyard, said Sheriff's Lt. Larry Lincoln.
