Pedro Fernandez, a 24-year-old Latino, was shot by a police officer and died on July 6 in the 11300 block of Iowa Avenue in Sawtelle, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Fernandez, of Tarzana, and another man were robbing a man and a woman when a police officer drove by in an unmarked patrol car, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

When Officer Kenneth Collard got out of the patrol car, the other man ran off and Fernandez approached  with an object in his hand, police said.

Collard shot Fernandez in the torso, and he died at the scene. Fernandez and the other man, identified by police as Matthew Ryan Ingels, 23, were also suspects in an earlier robbery. Ingles was found and arrested shortly after the incident.

Four reader comments about Pedro Fernandez

I knew Pedro, I knew the kind, fun loving, active young soldier he was. He did what he was told with out question from soldiers that outranked him. Always your back when it was up against the wall. The deployment to Iraq had a horrible effect on him. I'm hurt he's gone, I'm angry about the treatment he was given

I knew Pedro, he was my roomate in Ft.Bragg. He was a funny guy an always doing something, an no matter what he would have your back even if the odds were against you. After our first deployment, he changed. I wish I could say it was for the better. Im sad to see that things turn out this way.

Very sad end to a man who stood up and tried to do what was right for his country. I am sorry for everyone involved.

Pedro was a very good person, always joking around and having a good time. I didn't know him in the Army, but I know he was a great and brave soldier! You were a good friend and are always missed! My prayers go out to your family. RIP Brother!
