Died Feb. 18, 2007 at 3:15 p.m.
Randy Almanza, a 17-year-old Latino youth, was shot in the head at 6722 Vineland Ave. in North Hollywood and died at 3:15 p.m. Feb. 18.
The suspects — a neighbor among them — walked up to Almanza about 12:30 a.m. that night and shot him after what police described as a quarrel between rival tagging crews. He died later at St. Joseph's hospital. Two Latino suspects in their 20s have been arrested and the investigation continues.

I use to tag myself. Did it for fun, creativity, not necessarily to "vandalize".
We all want to fit in and express ourselves. Unfortunately others see it as a bad crime when the real crimes are being perpetuated by corporations and politics. think about it

— valley kid, I've given your post some real thinking.
" ..... real crimes are being perpetuated by corporations and politics. ...". Yeah right. A common quote by someone who needs to find an excuse in justifying their committing vandalism. Save those comments for a poli sci class because it doesn't work here.
As for tagging for fun; I bet a lot of people had a loads of laughs spending their money having to clean your mess up. Too bad we didn't have the occasion in laughing at you being forced to clean up the mess you made.
As for fitting in? You picked a very fine crowd of barbarians to "fit in" with.

Sycom3, you sicken me. Your apathetic and insensitive commenting towards the death of a young man and your response to the family member is seriously something so grotesque and in reality, it's people like you, (not "taggers") who make this world a horrible place to live in. Your one-sided, third person perspectives are yours, but to try to talk down to others such as a family member about how they "deserved it" is nothing short of mean and nasty. I hope your sorry ass never has to go through something like that, but if ever you do, you'll see just how inappropriate you were.
and I am writing this in response to the former post with the commenting. You pretentious, sorry excuse for a being.

— Iliads ...... I am not alone in not caring about the death of this individual. The deceased was a member of a group that is the harbinger of decay and violence.
All I have is words. The tagging crews have weapons and an acceptance that theirs is a violent sub-culture. So just who exactly is the danger to society?
So what if my words might have offended his family. Maybe they should have kept him out of the lifestyle he chose.
And I am of the firm conviction that his family owes the tax payers an apology for the mess he made that we had to clean up.

I strongly agree with Syscoms last post. I like how you tell it like it is. Keep up the good posts.

Syscom3, Meck, and Babs all three in one, are you so miserable that you cannot stop yourself from getting on the HR and inflicting more pain on people already in pain and trying to deal with their loss. You said " all I have is words", well the Bible say's a wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. Proverbs 15:4

Syscom3, while you are right that it was a crime, you are saying that death would be an acceptable punishment for graffiti vandalism. And yes it is your opinion, and as a person in this country, society and the government has gave you the right to your own opinion. However, I do not agree with your view on his death and his family paying for whatever property damage he may have caused. As a child, especially in this society, the older adults (such as parents and sometimes even older siblings) have some or little influence on what a child decides to do with their lifestyles. I have seen many kids get in harms way because of similar situations, but I don't believe it is correct to say that death is an appropriate demise for a teenager. Especially at the age of 17, because most kids don't even know what they want to do for the rest of their lives even a year after high-school, let alone the 11th grade. You seem to be educated, but don't be ignorant, because many people who have helped change the world in the positive direction have had rough times and have gone through phases that made them the person that they are.
Also, tax payers money isn't as distributed as you would imagine it to be. I know you probably think there are thousands of dollars spent on removing the graffiti of one certain cite, but the reality is that everything that happens (yes, even vandalism), causes some type of job to be created and even more tax payers money actually sent into the state, rather than out.
Just as you have the right to hold your opinion and speak your opinion, I have spoken mine.

Rodney,
So as long as the Grim Sleeper keeps someone working he should be set free? A crime is a crime and I don't care what level we have choosen to classify it as. To say that as long as vandalism has a positive effect because someone gets a job over it is the most ridicules thing I have read in a very long time! And as for his age 17 he might not have know what it was he wanted to do with the rest of his life but he sure as hell knew what he didn't want to do and that was be a positive and productive member of society. As far as parents not having a positive influence on thier own kids, really? because I have seen some great kids and young adults come from some really great parents. Parents that are involved, caring, loving, supportive and so on. May be that older brother can't get you to change your ways but it that really up to him to do? At 17 he knew right from wrong and should not have been commiting a crime and unfortunately his time ran out and he never got the opportunity to learn respect for others and to do unto others. Don't take away that fact that this young man made a choice and at 17 he knew exactly what he wanted to do even though he might not have known what it was he wanted 10 years from the date he died.

Rodney,
What controlled government/society did you grow up with? Society and the government gave Syscom3 the right to an opinion? What kind society and government has that kind of authroity? And who exactly are the many people you speak of that went through change? And what kind of change are you writing of? I mean we all go through changes. We grow up our views change our opinions change so what exactly are you writing about with the phrase change? Thank goodness that the government has allowed you to speak your mind hope it didn't hurt too much.

— Rodney ..... provide the quote where I said he deserved to die. I never said such a thing.
Once again, I am said to have done this or that only to have the accusation be proved to be baseless.
As for your last comment about the positive economic impact of graffiti; by your logic we should embrace criminal activity of all kinds because so many jobs will be created trying to suppress it, or take care of the aftermath. I've got a better idea, why don't you empty your own wallet to pay for the graffiti cleanup. Its always easy to spend other peoples money isn't it?
