Raul Amigon-Vergara, a 29-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the 4000 block of South Hoover Street in Vermont Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Authorities received a call about 7:20 a.m. and found Vergara on the sidewalk with several gunshot wounds, said LAPD Southwest Det. Vincent Carreon, who is handling the investigation.

Vergara was taken to a local hospital where he died 30 minutes later, according to coroner's records.

The day of the incident, police arrested Marco Hernandez, an 18-year-old Latino, in connection with Vergara's death.

Carreon said an ongoing dispute between Hernandez and Vergara had led to the fatal shooting.

Hernandez is being held at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic in lieu of $2-million bail.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 13 at the Los Angeles Municipal Court in downtown.

The neighborhood where Vergara was shot is among the most dangerous patrolled by the LAPD or Los Angeles County Sheriff, according to data collected for The Times' new interactive Crime L.A. database.

Between Sept. 24 and Sept. 30, violent crime reports jumped significantly with 22 violent crimes occurring within seven days.

Vermont Square, which is located in the city of Los Angeles, ranks 19th highest for violent crime per 10,000 residents. Since the start of the Homicide Report in January 2007, at least 35 people have been the victims of homicide in Vermont Square.
