Rene Cortez-Melendez, 36, a Latino man, was shot in the 1900 block of South Garth Avenue in the La Cienega Heights area on Tuesday, April 1.
According to Lt. Ray Lombardo of the LAPD's West L.A. Division, Cortez's body was discovered in a narrow pathway leading to the backyard of a home. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The motive for the shooting was unknown, he said.
