Rodney Nelson, a 34-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, June 8, in the 3400 block of South Budlong Avenue in Exposition Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Nelson was shot about 5:25 p.m. and taken to California Hospital Medical Center where he died a little more than 20 minutes later, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.

Nelson was the victim of a walk-up shooting, Winter said. No suspect was taken into custody, he said.

[Update June 15: LAPD Det. Brian Calicchia, who is handling the investigation, said Nelson was walking on the sidewalk when he was shot. Witnesses described the shooter  as a black male, but investigators have no additional information to go on, Calicchia said.

It has yet to be determined if the incident with Nelson is related to the shooting death of Raymond Gage, a 41-year-old black man, who was fatally shot within minutes and a couple blocks from Nelson, Calicchia said.]
