Homicide Report > Tyrone Snell, 36
Tyrone Snell, 36
Died Aug. 21, 2010 at 1:10 a.m.
Tyrone Snell, a 36-year-old black man, was killed Saturday, Aug. 21, at Men's Central Jail in the 400 block of Bauchet Street in downtown L.A., according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
At the time of his death, Snell was incarcerated on a forgery charge, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. He had pleaded no contest and was sentenced Aug. 18 to 16 months in prison, with 40 days credit time.
Three days after his sentencing, Snell was in a cell with three other inmates when he was killed, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office. The official cause of death was listed as asphyxiation and sharp, blunt-force trauma to the head.
Sheriff's homicide Det. Phil Guzman, who is handling the investigation, said a deputy at the jail noticed something amiss going on in the cell and found Snell dead when he went to check it out.
Det. Guzman said authorities believe Snell was killed after a disagreement among the cellmates.
No one has been charged in connection with Snell's death. Authorities are still investigating, Guzman said.

I just went to the viewing for Tyrone yesterday a very sad time for his family and friends! Tyrone, was a Husband, Father, Brother, and son and Friend...And his death was senseless and spineless! People go to jail for many reasons a lot of them are minor reasons unexpected things not everyone is in there because they are harden criminals and even so they are there to serve there time This man turned himself in and days later was dead for doing the right thing and taking responsibility for his actions! Tyrone was a good friend of my husband he was a caring and thoughtful man, he was there for others he has helped our family numerous times! He is a father and a good one and now his son will grow without his father due to the brutality of our jail systems I don't know all the details but I do know the inmates are not the only ones these men have to worry about when they go to the LA County Jail...And that is very sad that the ones you should trust you can't! I'm sure there are some good ones but we all know there are corrupt ones as well! And we wonder why it’s hard for some to trust the police I would like to but how when things like this happen! My prayers especially to his wife and son and all of his family and friends! This was a death that never should have happened! God Bless
Aug. 26, 2010 at 11:27 a.m.
That's too bad for him to be beat to death in there. I don't think that the deputies would have beat this man to death but it could be anything. I take care of mine so I won't have to go to jail
Aug. 26, 2010 at 3:25 p.m.
You never know a persons circumstances or what you may go through! And Unfortunately there is corruption in our jails and police departments there is good and bad in just about everything! Just Sayin...
Aug. 26, 2010 at 8:47 p.m.
That is a sad story. We never know what we will go through in this life. Now, the man is released from the real prison we are all living in. God keep this man in his heart and have mercy on his soul. A prayer for the family of this man, that they may be granted peace of mind for the time of mourning and a succesful transition.

I'm tyrone's cousin my entire family thanks you all for your words it means alot to us. We are working real hard to see that justice is served!
Aug. 27, 2010 at 7:42 p.m.
I was just wondering if you guys really read the article.....it didnt say police beating it said that some inmates were fighing or had a disagreement...where's the corruption in that....People are so quick to point the finger at the police until something happens in their family...I cant say that Tyrone deserved this but things happen for a reason...but I do know that we cant question GOD for taking him home.....quit looking for the chance at pointing the finger and wait for the real answer....

Syscom3-I have my perceptions of this world that should be of no concern to you. I don't worry about you, so don't worry about me. Let that be the end of it.

@Boyle Heights Citizen~
I too sometimes feel like this life is a prison. For me I am afraid to go out for fear of the criminals waiting for a victim, I don't go out to clubs or bars because the last time I did it was shooting and chaos,I feel as though I am living in a life size prison walking through this maze. I hope for both of us we can find peace here while we are living rather then in the afterlife.
Aug. 30, 2010 at 12:16 p.m.
This is so crazy- Three men beat this man to death and the guards are not able to hear his cry for help? I know it is loud in there but I would imagine the sound of being beaten to death would be heard by all. I know it should not be hard to find the killers because they were there in the cell-so why investigate, all of them are guilty of his murder. They are animals in the there and they will not be changed for the best on their release dates
Aug. 30, 2010 at 12:20 p.m.
Ater reading that report, I with my dear widowed friend. I believe very firmly that one of them sheriffs beat him to death! He was only in there for forgery, why would he have "beef" with another inmate? how stupid does that sound? Seriously! I've been to jail before so I know that there are corrupted police that are on he force..."protect and serve" my left ass cheek!! I say it loud and clear all the time Skrew the police with a long handled spoon for real!! When they find the sheriff that did it..... I'll feel real sorry for him..... Yahweh Elohim will find justice for my friend, her son and her inlaws!!

Today I am thinking about my brother and how he did not deserve to die in a place where people are paid to protect you, what a system we have. Tyrone was not perfect but who is? If you get a chance listen to the last song he told his niece about how he was feeling. It takes a brave person to admit that they are not living the way he was raised to live, but was willing to make a change for his wife and child. He started this change by accepting his responsibilty as a man and going to court and turning himself him.Luv U Ty
Sept. 5, 2010 at 12:30 p.m.
The song is I"m Not Afraid by Eminem, I hope that the people who are responsible for what happened to him, take a stand by taking responsibility for what they did, but if they don't I'll still be praying for them because they will have to answer to God for themselves.
Sept. 5, 2010 at 12:38 p.m.
It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to figure out who killed him.
In this case, the the family of the deceased is being let down by the LASD.
Remember this when Baca is up for reelection. If you want change, then the community as a whole must demand change.

im Tyrone's wife, and i want to 1st off thank everyone for all the prayers and sympathy that they have provided for me and my family thru this hard time. i've been going thru tyrone's laptop and i just so happened to come across the letter he wrote to my son on the day he was born and he says that a real man respects everyone even if they dont deserve it. then i seen all the home videos that he made. i thought that they were goofy at first but now i understand the concept, and im so grateful that he did it. my 10 month old son is going to grow up without his father but at least he has something to remember his father. and for whoever did this to my husband i hope that ur man enough to stand up and admit to what u have done to my family and accept the consequences like a real man should. tyrone did a lot of crazy stuff but he always admitted to his mistakes and took the consequences like a real man should. tyrone wasnt perfect but he has never let anyone down. i cant understand how people can be so evil as to brutally murder someone who was trying to do right by turning themselves in so that when they get out they could start all over for the good of their family, but the devil works in mysterious ways. tyrone was a good man and he didnt deserve to be beaten to death. and for whoever wrote this disgusting homicide report i would really like for you to get the facts straight before posting this because anyone that knows tyrone knows that he wasn't a fighter or even the one to argue. (this note is especially to the detectives investigating, i would like to be notified by phone or in person not over the l.a. times) and for the lost souls that murdered my husband please do the right thing and may god have mercy on your souls.

— Elease Snell, why was he even booked into jail? He should have been processed and released on recognizance if he only committed a non violent offense.
The system surely failed you and your husband.
Sept. 6, 2010 at 9:26 a.m.
RIP to the homie Tyrone aka (YES) he was never a violent person always willing to lend a helping hand it saddens me deeply for the homie to be gone but justice will prevail, because everything done in the dark comes to light. And the cowards who are responsible will pay. And of course the guards let him down protecting him. To Protect & Serve themselves not an inmate I find them guilty also. Damn Homie you will be truly missed. I'll be sure to pour out a lil liquor for you.

@ syscom3... the system did fail us, but i will get justice for my husband... im prepared to fight... tyrone was my everything, my soul mate, my best friend, and the father of my child... and it hurts me that everytime i look at my son he gets to acting up now because he's looking for his father... how do u really tell a child that they daddy is gone?? it really breaks my heart...
Sept. 7, 2010 at 7:39 a.m.
@Elease Snell
Lady, I'm sorry for your loss. I know that this could happen to anyone of us. I hope that the cowards responsible for this crime are caught and brought to justice. For God's divine justice may be slow to our eyes but believe truly that the hand of the most high has already singled out the killer and he will surely pay. I did not know your husband and I don't know you or the rest of you family. What I do know is that the void of what has been taken from you is heartfelt and sincere. A prayer for you and yours, that God may take you by the hand and lead you through the path of peace, that your child may find comfort, nurturing and positive guidance, and that what has taken place may never repeat itself. Stay up-Positive people, one day we will all get the justice we call upon everyday, let peace rain down from the heavens and cleanse the world from the evil that spews from the abyss. Long Live God, we pray for mercy, for love of brotherhood, loyalty, faithfulness, and harmony between peoples and nations.

My condolences to the Snell family. This should never happen and absolutely represents a failure of the staff at the jail. When we incarcerate someone, we have a collective duty to ensure they live in a safe and healthy environment (notice I didn't say comfortable; it is jail afterall). When someone is attacked in custody, they have no way to escape and so it is imperative that the staff monitor the situation all the time. In this case, they failed and there should be a serious review and consequences for whoever screwed up. Now as to the somewhat curious comments by Rousseau and Boyle Heights Citizen: what are you guys talking about 'the real prison we are all living in' and 'everywhere man is in chains'. Huh? Prison? Chains? Do you really feel that oppressed living in this great free country of ours? Please explain.
Sept. 7, 2010 at 11:04 a.m.
this is a very sad and sooo unfortunate story. it is the reason we MUST teach those in our lives who are feeling under the gun by the economy and suffering economic hardship/woes that crime is NEVER THE ANSWER. had he not been in prison for the checks, he might still be alive today. we cannot underestimate the mindset/conditions of those on the inside and the very best we can do is keep our loved ones out so they do not become victims of the system, in more ways than one. my condolences to his family and friends.

I was sent to jail a couple of times. Both times for driving with a suspended license. While in jail, I witnessed several fights between inmates. Every single one of these fights was over something stupid and were never broken up by the sheriffs. The fight went on until one of the inmates lay unconscious on the floor, or the other inmates broke it up. The worst place to end up in a 'disagreement' with someone, is in the holding tanks that you are put in when your case is heard in court. These tanks are concrete walls all around with a solid steel door. No one can hear you scream, and the bangs on the door are futile. While in the Compton Court holding tanks, I saw a man get knocked out with a gash on his forehead, and lay there for about an hour, until the bailiff came for the next case. When I was transferred to the Castaic jail from Men's Central, it was worse. Racial fights, gang checkings, jumpings, cord-ins. You name it. Sometimes there were sheriffs, but only a couple times did they come over to see what was going on, and only after someone was seriously hurt. It's like they didn't care to see inmates beat each other up. I myself was involved in a fight with two 'paisas', where one was hitting me with a broom and the other was biting me in the back. It was broken up by the inmates doing the same job that day, folding clothes. We were inside a laundry room and the only sheriff supervising was busy outside doing paperwork. It was really frustrating to me that I was fighting for my life against people who were in there for very serious crimes, and I was there for, really, a traffic violation. From what I experienced, the sheriffs know about it, but they just don't care. After a second stint in the county jail, I've made sure I always have a valid drivers license. County jail is a HORRIBLE place to be.

@Citizen john- We can't even leave the country without a PASSport. It is as simple as that. @Meck- you've given some of the less experienced insight about what goes on in our messed up "justice" system. Does anyone remember the story dubbed "scannergate"? The codes to the cell blocks were copied onto paper so that the supervising officer wouldn't have to get off his chair and scan the barcodes at each cell. He then was caught by higher authorities. They said that they would clean this up but look at what happened to Mr. Snell. The people should demand a full investigation of the matter because the officers in charge at county and other jails are not doing their jobs.
Sept. 8, 2010 at 9:35 a.m.
Boyle Heights Citizen - Sorry for the dissappointment, but I don't like having to go to jail frequently, so that I can give a more experienced insight on what goes on in there. I was just simply telling a story.
Sept. 8, 2010 at 1:45 p.m.
@ Meck, yeah man we get it. Nobody likes going to the can.

If you are a friend of Tyrone or his family and would like to leave a condolence for him the family would appreciate it if you place it at www.medprinting.net. Click on memorial gallery and look for his name. Thank you for all of the positive and up lifting comments about Tyrone, for only a person who knew him would know how much of a kind and wonderful person he was and how much laughter he brought to everyone around him. May God keep all of you in his heart, just as we keep Tyrone in ours.

SJP, Martha H, and Ridgeback: You have recently posted about how you aren't very bothered by prison/jail violence since those who end up there probably are violent themselves. (see Cesar Ullea) Yet in this case here we see what prison/jail violence has done. We have an apparently non-violent man who turned himself in on a forgery count and pleaded no contest. Because of inadequate supervision this man has been murdered in jail. Would you like to explain to this family your views on prison/jail violence once again?

its been a month since tyrone's murder and yet there have been no arrests or nething... tyrone was killed 8/21 and i lost my grandma 9/12 and its jus too much to handle... my son and i are suffering... i just really want justice for tyrone so tht his soul can finally rest..

Wow! A lot of time has passed by and still no word about who actually did this to my brother and no one has been charged. So much for believing in the "Justice System". I guess you have to be a "White" male for anyone working in this system to care. What must I be thinking, "WHITE PEOPLE" made up the "system" so of course that's the rule. But we will not give up until Justice for Tyrone has been done. RIP my beloved brother, we will always keep you in our hearts and mind. LUV U Patty

take it from somebody that has been in and out of there sometimes for charges that was put on me by the police when they had done something wrong. If they are pissed off at you they can throw you in places you should not be!!!! In one case I seen a young person go in there for a warrant on a j-walking ticket and wanted to complain about how he was being treated deputies told him well go to the sarge over there go talk to him he didn't stand a chance while they were beating him even after pleading on being sorry they broke his jaw. Even with me i had a charge against the police when i went in they threw me in a cell with nothing but hispanic gang members. Personally I knew tyrone and know that he was a good person. What happened was a set-up and even the investigators know it. It will be a cover-up.
