Edgar Battad, 63

Died April 24, 2011

Edgar Battad, a 63-year-old Filipino, was shot and killed by police Sunday, April 24, in the 100 block of East Newmark Avenue in Monterey Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[Editor’s note: An earlier version of this post, based on preliminary information provided by the coroner’s office, listed the victim as an unidentified male.]

The shooting occurred about 5 p.m. after officers responded to a report of a "road rage" stabbing at South Garfield and Newmark avenues, a busy commercial area, sheriff's officials said. The road rage incident may have been related to an earlier hit-and-run crash.

A resident, who asked that her name not be used, said she heard “a lot of shots” and officers ordering someone to “put the gun down.”

Monterey Park Police Capt. Eugene Harris said officers shot and fatally wounded Battad after he opened fire on them. “It was  very chaotic,” Harris said. “There were people everywhere.”

Authorities said the stabbing victim, whose name was not released, was injured in his upper body and was in stable condition at a hospital.

An officer and two bystanders were also hurt in the incident. Monterey Park policeman Gilbert Alvarez was grazed in the head and was in stable condition at County-USC Medical Center. The conditions of the bystanders were not immediately available, although one was shot in the leg, officials said.
