Vicente Chavez, 46

Died July 15, 2010

Vicente Chavez, a 46-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, July 15, in the 3700 block of Mettler Street in Historic South-Central, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Chavez was in his home about 9:15 p.m. when he heard someone outside yelling at his daughter, said LAPD Newton Det. Richard Arciniega, who is handling the investigation.

Chavez walked to the front yard and saw a man on a bike and told him to leave, Arciniega said. The man allegedly yelled back gang language at Chavez, and then shot him, according to Arciniega.

Authorities were called and Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter suffered a bullet graze wound to the chest. Arciniega declined to provide more information about the daughter.

Four hours after the shooting, police arrested Julio Flores, a 20-year-old Latino, in connection with Chavez's death and booked him on suspicion of murder.

Flores, who police describe as a known gang member, appeared in court July 20 and is being held in lieu of $1-million bail.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to contact Arciniega at (323) 846-5363. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477).

If society had been proactive in locking up known gangsters while they commit minor crimes, this homicide would have never happened.

But noooooo ..... some civil libertarians would be upset if violent barbarians are free to roam the streets (sarcasm intended).

syscom3, maybe you should go live in a communist country. Anything done to an extreme has consequences.

— jag, and what are the consequences? Career criminals removed from society so law abiding citizens can lead productive lives? Nothing extreme about putting some juvenile ofenders that are gansgsters into a special place for a couple of decades.

In the last three communist countries, these gangsters would get a show trial and then a bullet to the back of their head. I wish we could do it here, but we cant.

I'm thing about being a Vigilante, I'm alone. I have nothing to loose and I be helping society. I'm just sick of innocent people being killed.

I hate to say this, but I agree with syscom3. Democracies tend to have high crime rates. Say what you want about authoritarian governments like Saudi Arabia or Singapore, but they wouldn't tolerate these slope-headed beetle-browed gangbangers. Only in America do we sit back and WAIT FOR RETARDS WHO SWORN TO A LIFE OF CRIME TO ACTUALLY COMMIT CRIMES.

I bet if Jews were being killed everyone would be up in arms, draconian measures would be in place, maybe even martial law declared.
