About the data

Licensed bed counts come from the 1998 and 2007 Automated Licensing Information and Report Tracking System (ALIRTS) published by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.

For Children’s hospitals, The Times included beds identified in ALIRTS as pediatric and medical/surgical. Only pediatric beds were counted for other hospitals. The numbers do not include intensive care units for infants and children. Hospitals that shut down prior to 2007 were not included in the list of greatest decreases.

Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital, reported having 54 pediatric beds in its 2007 report but closed that year. The Times deleted those beds from the 2007 data. In other instances, changes at facilities since the 2007 report are noted but the bed totals were not changed.
