Winters, a solid all-around guard, was drafted by the Lakers in the first round in 1974. He averaged nearly 12 points and three assists his first year and was named to the all-rookie team.
Winters was part of part of the trade that brought Kareem Abdul Jabbar from Milwaukee to Los Angeles. Winters flourished in Milwaukee — where his jersey would eventually be retired — and had a productive nine-year NBA career, especially from 1975 to 1979 when he averaged 19 points a game.
Winters was named to two All-Star teams and, after retiring as a player, became the first head coach of the expansion Vancouver Grizzlies.
