The sixth overall pick of the 1985 NBA draft, Kleine spend the first three seasons of his career with Sacramento. He began the 1996-97 season with Phoenix before being traded to the Lakers, along with Robert Horry, for Cedric Ceballos and Rumeal Robinson. He played only eight games with the Lakers before being traded to the New Jersey Nets for George McCloud.
Kleine's biggest claim to fame came in college. As a senior at Arkansas, he led all Southwest Conference centers in scoring at 22.1 points per game, beating out Houston center Hakeem Olajuwon.
