Reid is considered a player who didn't quite live up to his potential in the NBA. After becoming a local hero while playing for North Carolina, Reid was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets as the fifth overall pick in 1989. After seven seasons in the league, and a year overseas in France (1996-97), Reid returned to the Hornets in 1998, and was traded to the Lakers in March of 1999.

He spent one season with the Lakers, playing in 25 games before signing as a free agent with the Milwaukee Bucks in August of 1999. He averaged five points and four rebounds.
