Petur Gudmundsson became the first person from Iceland to play in the NBA after signing with the Lakers as a free agent in March 1986, nearly five years after he was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers.

The 7-foot-2 center played three games during the regular season and 12 in the playoffs in 1986, then was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in February 1987 in the deal that brought Mychal Thompson to the Lakers.
