I've lived and worked on the Westside since 2002 and I have never once heard anyone refer to this area as Sawtelle. I've only known it as West LA. That's even how all of the rental websites and Craigslist have it named. As for the West LA as labeled by the Times, keep it as Century City and Rancho Park, the only names most people have heard of from there. It's easier on modern minds to picture West LA as "west of the 405".

Although I have heard stories about the Sawtelle & Olympic (Little Japan?) area being a dividing line during WWII to keep "Asian spies" away from the coast, the name Sawtelle just doesn't seem to be used any more.
