Glendale

Glendale (aka Armenia) is a dynamic city! The residents have continuously been contributing to the community at large. I especially like their school district and the education which I've received over the years. While I now live in Tujunga, I have been a Glendalian for over 18 years and I miss it. The traffic has grown to be ridiculous and property rates have skyrocketed but, overall, Glendale has a distinct culture of it's own and is worth the visit =)

Ive worked in Glendale for 3 years at the ANF in the Galleria. Im from Fullerton about 27 miles south down the 5. Glendale is a VERY nice place, depsite its "some-what negative" repuation of "obnoxious" armenians acting like they own the town. Yes, half the caucasian population is Armenian and the other White. But NOT all are obnoxious and rude. Glendale is a very exquisite and upscale city in most parts so no matter what you're bound to run into a few rude people. (May I remind you, You are in LA) Back in Fullerton you encountered the same. Mostly white, secondary is Latino and then in the northern hilly sections of my hometown you have the rich estate neighborhoods that are thrived with wealthy families. So the scene never changes.

What I like about Glendale is the downtown highrises, the Americana at Brand is a nice touch to my urban nightouts with friends or a date. I remember even kissing my gf at the time at the 8th level parking level overlook at dusk overlooking the entire Americana plaza during Christmas time.

The Galleria is a cool place with tons of popular and handy stores all in the mix. The Black Fridays there are unbelieveable!! I cant even imagine what the place will be like once they install the Bloomingdale's by the old Mervyn's....yikes! I also like the unique shops along Brand Blvd and Maryland Avenue in the original downtown. It has alot to offer! If it wasnt as expensive to get a descent apartment these days, I'd live there by now! Maybe one day...

But my negatives are of course, the traffic on the old worn-down freeways

(5, 134), Parking on the streets can suck when theres no spots (too many red curbs in places that shouldnt have them) and the occasional hot and sticky summer days that the valley dwells in.

My family extended family has lived in Glendale since around 1979, and I came in from Guatemala in 1984. I pretty much was part of the generation that brought all the changes to Glendale if you think about it. From mid 80s on is when the revolutions of the middle east and central america caused the influx of Armenians and other middle easterners and to a lesser degree central americans, which all combined to displace the previous European and Mexican immigrants from previous times. Despite all the animosity there seems to be between the groups, me personally growing up had friends from all groups, Armenian, Japanese, Korean, White, Mexican, Salvadoran, Philipino. Glendale was like a well to do microcosm for all these groups, with their ghetto cousins usually living in other areas of LA, Macarthur Park(central americans), East Hollywood(Armenians), Echo Park and other parts of central LA(Philipino, korean, japanese). In the end though the only thing i kind of dont like is that all these groups lost alot of their identity after living in Glendale for 20+ years. And in a way created a new identity and culture out of it. Im pretty sure if you go to Yerevan you can spot a Glendale Armenian even there. I know in Guatemala City i would definitly stick out,lol. Well its a beautiful town to grow up in, i cant afford it anymore, but will try my best to come back and raise my three kids in the future.

Glendale is unfairly derided. There's a surprising variety of culture and history. I administer a Facebook page if you're interested.

Multi-Ethnic eateries: especially the Armenian and Cuban food abound. Jazz in a small bar (JAX). Live theater and movie theaters. Shopping at the Americana and the nightly food trucks around there so almost anyone can afford some luxuries. Book stores: literary and mystery. Street intersection: Happiness (La Feliz) and Roads End). I am an ex-Pat, now living in Philly, and miss the town greatly.

Glendale is a great city. It is also very safe. The people here are very nice and open hearted. You can find alot of entertainment in Glendale.

Great place to leave and raise your kids. Good schools, very low crime rate, a lot of things to do. The Americana at Brand and Glendale galleria. Close to downtown L.A. A lot of excellent restaurants, movie theaters and interesting people to talk and mingle with.

Use to be a great place to raise a family 20 years ago, but not now.

It's very urban and everything is close, often walking distance. There are good buses to get to all parts of the city. There are some parks, and the City is pretty green with lots of trees and landscaping. I don't feel I dwell in a concrete jungle. City Hall and the Police Dept. are right in downtown only 10 blocks from former condo.

This is the LA times, not only do they report the news, they take an active role and use their many years of research and knowledge to do awesome things like this map project. Glendale is a very nice place to live.

I don't want the demographics for a town on a NEWS website I want the NEWS for that town.
