Reader comments on life in Winnetka
I have owned a home here in Winnetka for 14 years now. When we first bought it was a much better neighborhood, pretty well taken care of, now if it on the decline with drugs and robbery! We are forced to use exterior cameras and alarm systems on our home now! The school system is terrible here, we send our children to private instead. Although our home is in a cozy culdesac and our neighbors are wonderful, we would move if we could afford to.
I spent ages 8 - 18 here, and it was a safe place to grow up. Winnetka park was the only community resource. Winnetka Ave. school needed grass back then - all blacktop asphalt, so not fun to play on! Sutter Jr. High seemed decent at the time, but don't know if I would send my own kids there if I had a choice. People tended to keep to themselves, and it was very boring for a teenager. Glad I don't live in the Valley anymore.
