One comment about the Elmer Wood Elementary

I visited Elmer Wood School today. My husband and I were returning home to Fresno when I decided that I wanted to drive by my old house on High Street. I moved to Atwater in Jan. 1959, the first year that the school opened. I was six and in 1st grade. I stayed through June of 1960 for second grade while my dad was stationed at Castle Air Force Base. My name was Luann Beatty back then. I remember that the school was surrounded only by fields. One of my favorite memories was of my second grade teacher, Mrs. Cable. She was so kind. She and her husband owned a little store over in the strip mall down a ways from the school. I think it was on the corner of Bellview and something like Schafer St. I am sure that Mrs. Cable's kindness was part of the reason that I became an elementary teacher. I have been teaching 35 years in Clovis Unified. Another favorite memory was of the push merry-go-round.(We would run around real fast holding on to the bar and then we would jump on as it continued to turn). It was out in the grass area where the big trees are now to the left of the school as you are facing it. I looked all over the school for the date that the school was built, but it was posted nowhere. That really should be there. I had a great time driving around finding places that I remembered. I am sure that Mrs. Cable has passed on. Does your district have any information on former teachers?
