Three comments about King/Drew Medical Magnet High

Can someone explain to me how a medical science magnet can only meet 11.4% proficiency in math? This school used to be great and now... well, now it's just another school in LAUSD. And that English score? It's great as long you're not Latino. I was considering sending my child there but their EL scores are atrocious. No one I know from my culture wants to go there anymore. If you like math, go somewhere else. If you're Latino, go somewhere else.

I am a former student of King/Drew (2009) and the reason our academic level has slowly been decreasing every year is not the teachers fault it is the students fault. They are the ones making the choice to fail themselves. I was a senior mentor last year and I can say that the nineth grade students from the 2008-2009 school year just did not care. You can threaten them saying "if you don't make the grade then you will be exspelled from the school" they don't change their attitudes what so ever. So I believe we shouldn't be blaiming the teachers but we should ask the students why aren't they doing what they are required.

Well honestly I just graduated from there you must take into consideration the students and their attitude toward learning. If someone does not want to learn you can not force them and I have seen this first hand. Also many schools make the mistake of saying that the state test do not count for anything. Therefore causing students to fill in anything as long as it does not jeopardize there grade or gpa. Not saying this school is the best just saying you can not just look at the numbers. I came from another school in LAUSD and it was a great switch.
