Six comments about University Senior High
The school has gone to the dogs in the last 10 years, it is what is referred to as a "feeder" school, meaning that the worst in the city, should they fail to get into their local schools, are sent there. Sad situation, where once it was one of the best, it's now the kind of school you wouldn't send your child to if you wanted to.
I CANNOT believe this comment! Our school may be bad to others who arent participating in events and clubs and challenging classes, and yes this does reflect on our overall scores, but there are programs and MANY ENDLESS opportunities for students when dealing with college, AP courses, Honors courses, and even scholarships that are offered just by going to UNI. One scholarship for UCLA, a very prestigious school, is ONLY offered to Uni graduates so before saying that the school has gone to the dogs, maybe you should talk to the students who go there and get their direct opinions. UNI is wonderful and I am definitely involved in my school in 3 AP Classes per year and Leadership. I'm just saying, don't knock it until you try it! By way, this is coming from a very intelligent young black woman. LETS GO CLASS OF 2009!
While I agree that there are some much needed improvements (more teachers, renovations done to the school.. especially the floors from what I remember!), Uni wasn't that bad of a school. Sure it had a bad reputation, but the classes and teachers I had were far superior to the private school I had previously attended. I learned more in my senior year at Uni than I did anywhere else.
The teachers are doing a great job considering how many students they see a day and considering the little funding they receive.
And like the other commenter said, there are plenty of AP classes and opportunities for students to grow. Its just a matter of students taking advantage of those opportunities.
Most of my classmates went on to Ivy League Schools or other extremely reputable colleges. (Class of 2003)
I am researching the teaching of world religions in California schools. The course cited as subject is offered in COLTON HIGH . What is the textbook used for this course? Grateful, if you provide me the name & e-mail address of the teacher concerned so I may contact him/her for my research project. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Onkar Singh Bindra, Ph.D. (U.C. Berkeley)
I currently go to uni and i cant say im having a great time. im in ninth grade and in all honors classes and will be taking AP calc nect year. Its not terrible but its just not anything that good. I know a lot of nice people there and some of the teachers are good. I dont know if i would go there again if i had the chance but its deffinitely better then some.
I'm a prof at a top-tier college and a member of the class of '89. When I was a student at Uni, there were really three tracks: AP/Honors, AE, Regular. The AP/Honors was another world. In this sense, the school was very segregated. I was taught English by a woman who eventually won the American Book Award. Consistently, Uni won second or third place in the academic decathlon. All my friends from the AP track matriculated to top UC or private universities. Even when I was there, the school's reputation (which was tip top) was based on the scores and performance of no more than 200 students. If you want to make comparisons, you might look at the scores of this group, instead of the larger one.
