Nine comments about Park Western Place Elementary

I'm a former student of Harbor Magnet, and the teachers in all my five years were excellent and engaging. I was introduced to concepts elementary students are usually not exposed, and I learned physics while building paper airplanes and balloon-powered cars. Of course, the teachers that I had are probably teaching different grades, but the core curriculum is still the same.

A few of my former classmates went on to CAMS and others went on to Dodson and middle schools in Palos Verdes. A good few are excelling in advanced math and science classes. It's great if you're in the magnet program because of the emphasis in math/science.

    Nicole,

    Thank you for your comment.

What is not apparent here is that the scores of Harbor Magnet and Park Western Place are not distinguished. That makes it more difficult to compare with the top schools listed in this web site.

I just want to state for the record how privileged I feel to have worked with such great colleagues, office staff and administration in my years at Harbor Math Science Magnet/Park Western Place Elementary.

I especially want to say to all of my former students how much I appreciated you.

    Your servant always,
    Mr. Behrens

Hello I am Samantha E. a 5th grader student of Park Western Place. It will be my last year at the school and I'm very sad to leave but overall I had a very great time here.

    The Teacher's Mrs.Ramirez,Mrs.Skubik,Mrs.Dornberg,
Mrs.Reid,Mr.Behrens,Mrs.Miller and Mr.Giardina have been the best teachers ever, and I want to thank them by letting them know how much I appreciate their hard work into making this the best 5 years of my life.

I recommend this school to new children because it is just amazing how the teachers put all this effort to make a better life for you,I really think that is amazing.

    You rock Park Western Place!

I left HMSM in 1993 and went on to Dodson, then Narbonne. My closest friends are from my HMSM days, and we often joke that there are kids voting now that weren't born when we first met. HMSM was one of the best school experiences in my life, even though I did get suspended a few times for minor infractions like selling fireworks at school.

But one thing I have to mention... Mr. Behrens? I wonder if this is the same Mr. Behrens we had in our elementary school years. Mr. Behrens, you rocked.

    Thank you Edward!
It is the same Mr. Behrens but with a lot less hair.
Come and visit if you can.
    Yours, Mr.B.
    P.S.
I'm happy to see they finally reported the scores properly.

I was a student back in 1961. I had received the most education while being there. True, things were alot different back then; the student body was mostly "white", the general subjects were "easier", and EVERYONE got along with everyone.
The times have changed but I still have fond memories of the school and the teachers. It was, and hopefully still is, a great starting point in education for all children.

I wished to say that much of the comments here don't even begin to describe how strong the academics and environment are at Harbor Magnet. My daughter was in Mr. Behren's math class last year and he is, much like most of the teachers in the Gifted Program, some of the most qualified and enthusiastic teachers anywhere. It is a privilege to have your child studying with them. My daughter is at least two years advanced in math and well advanced in English - much more than my relatives kids who go to Torrance, Poly in Pasadena, and the other well regarded schools in the region. The real strength of the school is its faculty and staff who aren't afraid to challenge both their students and us parents as well (I know they're not afraid of telling us what their expectations from us are as well). Without a doubt, Harbor Magnet isn't just the best elementary school in the South Bay, but if the scores could be separated from the general student population of PWP; it is probably one of the strongest if not best in the LA region. The teachers and admin deserve to be recognized for the great job they do.

Whoa, still remember Mr. Behrens from 4th and 5th grades. How about Mr. G (Giardina)? Man, it has been a long while since I visited PWP/HM. Back then, we were the Bulldogs, but now the Pelicans? How did that happen? Anyway, I am from the class of 2004 and I was referred to as the "Human Calculator." (Mr. Behrens, you remember?) I attended PWP/HM from 3rd to 5th grades and I enjoyed learning there. I went on to Dodson and then Torrance High. (Mr. Behrens, I admitted defeat to Seichi K. during middle school. He's a bit better than me. Ehhhhhhhhhhh....) It was very memorable attending Park Western Place/Harbor Magnet Elementary School.
