Two comments about the Westlake High
You mean there is a public school that has ZERO tolerance for poor performance?
BRAVO!
The state's data does not reflect the fact that Westlake High School loses many students from the 9th to the 12th grade. My child graduated in 2007 and the freshman class of 624 shrank to less than 500 by the time of graduation. Westlake High School never talks about this fact. The high school requires students to leave the school if they are not making proper academic progress to graduate on time. When they are forced to leave, they go to Conejo High School which is a continuation school. At that school they are not given remedial help but rather, they study books that will enable them to obtain a GED, but no help to prepare for community college. My child had friends who didn't make it at Westlake. They were nice kids and were not in trouble. I would refer to this problem at Westlake's Vanishing Class (the class of 2007 was not unique). If you are interested in having your student attend Westlake, please inquire about the statistics of how many kids are lost from when they begin in the 9th grade up to graduation. They must have that information because they provide a class rank on the report card which shows a rank out of the number in the class. Each year that number got smaller and smaller. At the graduation I think there were only 475 who graduated in June, 2007.
