I tried to get him to forget the Army. I'd give him choices, tell him, 'You can go to law school or learn computers,' but he said he still wanted to be a soldier.
— Jonathan Contreras, father
Moments before the explosion that took his life, Contreras turned to the gunner in his Humvee and insisted on switching seats. Ordered to stay put, he moved anyway. He said his order was coming from a higher source. The other man lived.

I never met you in person but the way that your cousin Stephanie would describe you made you seem like a hero in my eyes. I really value your braveness to protect our country out there in the battle field. I've seen your little girl in some pictures. She lost a great father I'm sure. Hopefully one day I'll meet you up there so I can meet the great hero that gave his life for this country.
