I tried so hard to convince him not to join [the Army]. But he taught me a lesson about patriotism ... that pretty much killed every argument I had.
— Hector Castro, father
Castro was one of two soldiers who died Aug. 28 in Babur, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. Castro was a former Westlake High School student and football player. Castro was awarded the Bronze Star posthumously. One of his brothers, Sergeant Ryan Castro, 25, just returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq.

Six memories of Andrew J. Castro
I was in the same unit as SPC Castro. I didn't deploy this time due to medical issues, but while we were back here at Fort Campbell I had the honor to get to know him. He was a hard worker and loved to have fun after the mission was complete. No matter what we had to do, even if we weren't happy about the task he always had a way to make the mood lighter. Andrew was a very good guy and we are all devistaed to have lost him as a friend. SPC Andrew Castro, you will always be remembered.
I am Marine wife, and it breaks my heart in to pieces to read and hear about this fatalities. No matter what Branch of military you are part of, you are still family to me. I will pray for him and his family. Words cannot describe how sad and devastated I feel. Thank you for keeping my children and me free and safe. God Bless his family and friends.
Castro was always a funny guy. The typical prankster per say or comedian. There was never a day he didnt joke around. He was always making jokes or conducting pranks to many of our friends. He was an intellectual individual who always strived to do the best he could do. He was a great friend and never had a problem in making new friends. I personally can say that he was a great soldier, but now i can only rest on that thought. My prayers are with your family A.J. and maybe i'll see you one day. Unfortunately i was unble to pay my respects to you, even though we were in different parts of Afghanistan.

A.J. Castro
To the Castro Family:
Please except my condolence. Some there is going to come a time when wars will cease and be no more. The Bible makes that promise at Psalms 46:9. Also, the Bible makes the promise that there will be a time when you can see your dead love ones again. That promise is at John 5:28, 29. Trust in Almighty God and he will see you through these difficut times. It's not His will for people to die.
My the God of Comfort be with you. Please take care of yourselves.
It was so sad to hear of the loss of your son, AJ. Although I never knew him my nephew played Warrior football with his brothers. Frankie too was killed in Afghanistan and he is missed every day. Please know that we take comfort in knowing that their efforts will always be remembered by the memorial wall at the Westlake Warrior stadium and that at least they will have each other to pass to in heaven. May God bless and keep your family wrapped in his arms.
I first met you in AIT and you always had a smile on your face. Your sacrifice has made such an example of what a true soldier is and what it means to be an American. You will be missed and my prayers are with your family. God Bless you A.J.
