He just loved to take chances. He loved motorcycles. He loved parachute jumping and … he just loved the Army, basically.
    — Edward Grochowiak, father

Grochowiak was one of two soldiers who died Aug. 30 in Malajat, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. Although the military reported his hometown as Lompoc, family members said he was born and raised in San Diego.

My son, PFC Joel Brattain, KIA 3-13-2004, Iraq served with Casey in the 504th, 82nd Airborne Division. I never got to meet Casey but this past week I have heard about the great soldier he was. Our hearts go out to his family.

Im gonna miss Casey very much. He was a great guy and we had a lot of fun paintballing while at 6th RTB. Prob one of the very few ppl I trusted and could actually go out with without wanting to hit with a whiffle ball bat.

I wish your children and wife the best and my wife sends her prayers.

I lived and worked with Casey at Camp Rudder,6th Ranger Training Battalion. Casey and his wife always had the best 'Rudderville' Parties. My wife and I miss the Grochowiaks very much. Casey sought to deploy and made sure that I did not put anything on his PCS physical that would prevent him from deploying even though he could have avoided it. He felt it was his duty. He was a great soldier. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Rangers Lead the Way!

    Mrs. Grochowiak and Family:
Please except my condolence for the death of your husband. I know this is a difficult time for you, your children and other family members. Please remember Almighty God loves you and your children and the rest of your family. He is the Comforter of pain and gives us peace and shows us mercy. Also, He gives us a hope for our dead love ones the Bible speaks of it in the book of John 5:28,29. At Psalms 46:9 it talks about how Almighty God Jehovah will make wars to cease. Please read these scriptures, I'm sure they will comfort you somewhat. I share your pain.

Casey has been the most influential person in my career. I looked up to him, and all of his guys in 2nd squad C co 2-504th PIR couldn't have had a better leader while in Afghanistan. RIP ranger brother. RLTW...

Casey, I've just seen your picture in the Army times...WOW, what a shock. We served together with the 504th PIR (C 2-504), Ft Bragg, NC. You were a consumate professional always striving for the best. I really admire and miss the discipline and professionalism within C 2-504.
May your soul rest in perfect peace and light perpetual shine upon you.

Casey had every toy imaginable when we served together @Cco2/504th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division. When I asked him how he could afford all of them he said: "Ryan, life is too short to not have fun and have all you want, besides, none of this stuff is going with me when I die." I learned so much from you bro. Praying for those you left behind,

    Casey

You were one of the most lively and outgoing people I ever met in my military career and to say the least your sunny disposition on things even when life was handing out lemons made an impact on my life and the way I approach situations in my life to this day... You are missed and always will be Rest in Peace Ranger... Rangers Lead the Way..
