It's a difficult position to be in, on either side, really. Often times when police officers make notifications, it's based upon an unexpected death, be it traffic accidents or homicide or other circumstances of that nature. When your child's in Iraq, you just know that the potential for that occurs every day. You pray that it doesn't, but you know it does.
— Wayne Hiltz, father, a retired deputy police chief
His parents started the Cory Hiltz Smiling Heart Memorial Scholarship which is awarded not on the basis of academic achievement but on the recipient's kindly dealings with others.

12 memories of Cory F. Hiltz
I'm heartbroken for loss of Cory. I remember him and Bryce laughing and playing at the pool. He was a good boy. I give my sincerest regards to your family.
LOVE,
Ciara
When I run by the street light flying the red banner in his name, I proudly salute a young hero I never knew.
Hiltz, a good friend, smart, and funny. We love you Hiltz. You are always remembered. We pray for you.
for all of you who knew cory this pretty much sums him up
"peachy keen"
you were a good friend and fought by my side, i miss you brother
cory hiltz was my hero. plain and simple. i love him so much. every time i think of him...i just hear his voice telling me to 'cheer up kid i love you' he was an amazing influence on me...and i will never forget him. i love you sweetheary...and i wish you were still here to hold me and kiss me...and to tell me everything will be okay.
As a resident of nearby San Dimas, I often see Cory's banner and wish somehow he could have known the unspoken gratitude of those he gave his life to protect. Adding flowers or flags to his curbside memorial seems far to little for one who gave so much. Family, friends and even strangers, like me, will never forget this brave young man who fought for his country.
His coming and going away parties, stuffed mushrooms and him standing over me with his chin on my shoulder while I made them for him. All of the boys together laying around after a difficult night of fun! I love him everyday!
I vividly remember making a left turn off Foothill Blvd. onto Wheeler Ave. in La Verne when a saw PFC's Cory Hiltz's black banner with hundreds of flowers and teddy bears at the foot of the light pole which his banner proudly waved in the early July 2007 air.
Although the war had been in progress for about five years, it truly hit home when I saw Cory's memorial.
I can only imagine the loss your parents, family and friends feel but I know you are still remembered daily as you are honored by hundreds who place flowers and notes at the foot of your banner on Wheeler.
Thank you Cory and your family for your love and dedication to our country. May God grant you eternal rest and may God bless America.
"I pray our heavenly father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrafice upon the altar of freedom."
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully
A. Lincoln
It's never really been improved upon.
Corey Loved My Cousin Stephanie and he was a great guy. even though I didn't know him, I knew that he would be a great person to meet Rest In Piece We love you and appreciate you fighting to keep America safe we all will miss you
I went to school with Cory. We lost touch as young friends often do, but I remember his smile and laughter. He was always such a bright and happy boy. I hadn't spoken to him in years, and I still remember driving by the banner in La Verne that told me of his fate. When I knew Cory he was a good boy, from what I've learned he was a good man. Even though we were no longer in contact I was aware he was overseas and I bawled like a baby when I discovered what happened, right there in the car on the side of the road. I am so glad there is a scholarship fund in his honor.
I will always remember the boy who ate salads with me at lunch, joked with me between classes, and was a true friend who never asked anything in return.
Blessings to his family and friends.
