I was at a friend's house. My husband called and said, 'Come home. Just come home.' When he opened the door he was crying and I saw the chaplain and the other officers, and of course I knew it was Danny.
— Lynda Unger, mother
Unger was the first member of a California National Guard unit to die in combat during the war. A skilled center fielder, Unger had dreamed of playing college baseball, but passed on a scholarship so that he could serve in Iraq.

3 memories of Daniel
Daniel and his mom gave me and Jose C. plenty of rides home from town to tullievill after football practice (8th grade)
I am proud to have served with Daniel in Iraq. He was as motivated and honest to himself and his faith as any young individual I've met. God bless his family for their strength.
Thank you for the ultimate sacrifice so that the people in America can continue living free. There are alot of people in this country that have no clue, respect or honor for those like you that paid the ultimate price to live the way that we do in America. Living free is not free, it comes at a very high price. You payed that price for the Country you loved. Although I never knew you Daniel, I thank you and honor you. God Bless you, Ronald Weber
