He was someone you could count on. He was someone you'd want there in the heat of battle. You always knew he was watching your back.
    — Master Sgt. Javier F. Martinez, senior enlisted sergeant on Metzger's team

Metzger was one of seven Army Special Operations Command soldiers who died Oct. 26 when the MH-47 helicopter they were aboard crashed in Darreh-ye Bum Afghanistan. Metzger was on his third deployment to Afghanistan. Fellow soldiers lauded his dedication and described him as a strapping, affable comrade who paid close attention to detail.

Dave, we will all miss the neighborhood parties. Tony, Greg and I found out and couldn't believe it. We are all three over here right now in Afghanistan. We all wish we could be there for you. We will never forget the good times! I never thought this would happen to someone so close, even though we had lost communication with deployments, it still hurt. I hope you are okay, and know that we will all meet you on the other side! We all miss you deeply!!

I knew David for about 4 years while stationed in Germany, we went through many deployments and spent a great deal of time together. David was a great friend who will be missed and will always be remembered.
