I woke up Christmas morning. But when the knock came, it wasn't Christmas anymore.
    — Patty Gutierrez, wife to San Jose Mercury News

Gutierrez died Christmas Day at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan, after insurgents attacked his patrol with an improvised explosive device in Howz-e Madad. His wife told the San Jose Mercury News that their three sons, ages 12, 6 and 4, had last seen their father via Webcam on Christmas Eve and Guitierrez was able to watch the boys open their presents.

To many of us David will always be remembered as "gut". He was the guy you could always count on. His love for sports, family, friends and this nation has and always will fill our hearts. Though he is now fallen, he will never be forgotten. We love you David! May your family pull through this terrible time.

David had a heart of gold and a fabulous sense of humor. He gave me my first taste of ceviche and I have never forgotten how wonderful it was and to this day cannot duplicate it. Patty is a forever friend and although we haven't spoken in awhile she crosses my mind every now and again when I see something here in Hawaii that reminds me of her. My heart aches at this tragedy. Much love to you Patty.

Uncle Dave, may you Rest In Peace Uncle. I'll always remember the times we had living in Modesto when you and autie Patty would visit and stay the weekends. We always played sports and we always wrestled against each other to the point we broke my moms couch. So you know, I try to better myself each day serving in the ARMY wanting to be as dedicated like you were to family and to the uniform. Continue to watch over your family now Uncle, the Ladaga famiy will never forget you...

There wasn't a time when I was around him that he didn't make me laugh. We love and miss you, David. ALWAYS!!! Trotter-Neal Family We love you, Patty (Ate), Andrew, Jeremiah and Gabe!! I never had the honor of meeting David, yet I know his spirit. His dad and I fought together in Vietnam as paratroopers in 1968.

Sleep well gentle warrior, your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Thank you for serving our country. I pray that each day that passes your wife, children, family and friends continue to feel your presence in their lives. I did not know you but reading about your passing made me cry. As a wife and mother and can only imagine what your family is feeling now that you are not here. May you rest in peace and may your family learn to celebrate Christmas in a new way.
