We made a lot with a little. We had a lot of fun with the little money we had. He kept me out of a lot of trouble... he kept me grounded.
    — Jose Martinez, childhood friend

Born in Mexico, Jimenez came to the U.S. with his mother and sisters when he was 11 to join his father. Before he went to Iraq, he applied for citizenship. It was granted after his death.

Four memories of David Jimenez Almazan

David, we will never forget you, your smile and charisma will be with us forever. I personally won't forget about the great times we spent together in the "San Fernando Valley" when we were single. From working at Costco in VanNuys for so many years, to going out together with Ubaldo, Lizette, Sarah, Monica and so many other great friends we had while living in the valley. I wish your family the very best in moving forward and our prayers are with you and your entire family.

    Miss you dearly,

We went to Van Nuys High School together and just found out last night that you're no longer with us. I can't stop myself from crying as I kept asking my close friends about you. Today I'm motivated to keep in touch with as many friends as possible. Thank you so much for being a strong support during Humanitas Class. I will never forget how much you encouraged me to keep up my studies. You understood how hard it was for me being a foreigner student. You used to like Shakira so much back in 97 you predicted she'd be the bomb..!! David; all of us remember you and always will (Domingo, Maribel, Fernando, Alma, Eva, etc).
My most sincere condolences to David's family....

His family and him lived just across the street so many years ago. My brothers and him used to play around a lot, and they were great friends and I remember I wanted to be older to join them in their games.

Farewell cousin, we will not forget you.
