Mommy, everything over here is fine. Tell my dad that I'm still saying my prayers. See you soon.
    — David T. Toomalatai, in an e-mail two days before his death

Toomalatai, a Samoan American, joined the Army when his girlfriend was pregnant, telling her that by enlisting he could better take care of their unborn son. He also saw it as a way to pay for college. Their baby boy was 10-months old when he was killed.

He was and is a great football player! I wished I could have said goodbye to a great friend! My prayers are with his son and family!

I don't see my senior year being what it was without David. He was apart of every great memory I have of that year. He was one of those people that you only come across once in your life. This guy was the real deal, in every aspect.

David Toomalatai earned my respect both on & off the field. He was a hard working athlete & highly motivated student. An individual that proudly represented our community at the highest level. Although he may no longer be with us physically, he will always be remembered as a huge part of my high school experience. Whether it was telling jokes in the locker room, playing madden on the weekends, or challenging each other in computer class, David is an amazing human being I'm glad to have met.

May I first start off by expressing my condolences to you and your family of Private 1st class soldier David Toomalatai. I am deeply saddend by your loss. Even though I never met your son, I have a great admiration for what he was there to accomplish. On behalf of Calvary Chapel Santa Fe Springs and myself we would like to extend a personal invite to our "Day to Honor"community festival where we come together as a community in the city of Santa Fe Springs and honor our Fallen Hero and their families. This community event would take place May 29th,2011. I will continue to ask the Lord to strengthen you and your family daily as you go through this difficult time.

T it's been a while. I look @ my pics of medic school from time to time & it's still hard. Still remimber formations, how long it takes you to get your hair ready to go anywhere, and how much of a beast you are at combatives(undefeated & absolutely crushing all challengers!). I know damien's going to grow up strong just like you. I love you bro, and still missing you. Rest in peace. Thomas

I Pray for the family and friends of PFC Toomalatai, David. As a soldier it is difficult to leave your family and loved ones behind just to be able to provide a better life for them. I commend you my brother in arms and pray that you son remembers the TRUE HERO you are. God bless you and your loved ones.
