He was going to serve his country. He thought [joining the Army] was something good for him.
— Sara Silva, mother in Salinas Californian
Department of Defense officials said Silva, who worked as an Army cook, died June 9 at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, of a non-combat related incident. His mother told the Salinas Californian: "We really don't know what happened to him." A full obituary to follow.

10 memories of Eduardo

I will always remember the great times I spent with one of the best friends I have ever had. He was always happy and enjoying life. I do not have one bad memory of him. Lalo always lent you a hand if you needed it. I remember one time I was stuck in Salinas with no ride and I called him asking for a ride, no questions asked he came to get me. That's just one instance of him being a great person. We had great times Lalo and I am saddened by your inopportune death but I know you are in a better place. I loved you like a brother and will always remember you as a fun loving, happy, enjoyable person. YOU WILL BE MISSED!!!

Animooo y mil bendiciones

Eduardo was one of the nicest, polite, always helping others, respectful, curtious, joyful, and a bright light that no one could ever dim young man. I was honored to be part of his life while he was in band. I still see him smiling at me as he followed every beat, he has the best smile. I honor and think of him everytime I call my son because he influenced my sons name. I hoped when I named my son that he would be as wonderful as Eduardo. I have held Eduardo in my heart for years and will continue to. To his wife and family I know it is the worst thing that can happen but I know you can feel his love. My sympathy is overwhelming be cause I loved him and all of you so much. You all supported me when I taught Eduardo and Elizabeth if I can do anything please feel free to ask.(I'm in the Soledad phone book)

The memories I have of my cousin Lalito are many. When he lived in Fresno, I would always check up on him. I remember one time he came out of the apartment half asleep and with the craziest hair style. Even though he was half asleep, he had the biggest smile ever. I would take him out to grab something to eat because I was worried that he was not eating since he was way too thin. I will always have those and many more memories of Lalito in my heart! We miss you!! Love Araceli Silva

I met Eduardo in Salinas when he came home for mid-tour leave. He was so happy to share the time with Rosalinda, his family and friends. He seemed so happy, laughing with us. He seemed proud of what he was doing. I know we were all proud of him, too. God bless you, Eduardo, and may God watch over your family.
