Kristensen was based in San Diego but grew up in Washington, D.C., according to his Washington Post obituary. He was leading a mission to rescue other SEALs when his CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down by Afghan insurgents. All 16 Navy and Army personnel aboard died.
