She went to the casket and said, 'Can I touch his face?' I said, 'Yes, mija, touch his face, touch his hand. Remember him. This was your father.'
    — Raimundo Borjas, recalling what he said to his 11-year-old niece at her father's funeral

Borjas, a SWAT officer with the San Diego Police Department, rejoined the military a decade after a stint in the Marines. He told family and friends that he wanted to honor his cousin, Eric U. Ramirez, who was killed in Iraq in 2004, as well as fulfill a longtime goal of serving his country overseas.

I had the opportunity to train with Sgt. Borjas at Fort Dix a year ago this day (2 Nov 08). I am ending my tour in Iraq and last night I got the news of his death. I can say without a doubt that Borjas was a "Soldiers Soldier". Attention to detail and a very sharp person. He also had a joking side; it was made evident when he and 2 other Soldiers put a fake snake in my sleeping bag and scared the mess out of me. He will truly be missed by the Soldiers that trained with him at Ft. Dix last year and all that knew him. And to the family, "peace be with you during this time of sorrow and may you find comfort in the arms of the Lord"

SGT Federico Guerra Borjas was one of my best troops and very close friend. "Rico" as we all new him was a man of action and always lead from the front. He epitomized the ideals of our military and was an example of being the "Best of best" in his primary career,as a San Diego Police Officer and as an Army CA Paratrooper. For those of us that had the pleasure of working with and knowing Rico, it is a tragic loss for our nation and for the residents of San Diego--they lost an exceptional community leader and policeman. To Rico's family my heart is with you and may you find peace in the fact that Rico truly made a difference. His actions while wearing the Army uniform will make America safer! Rest in peace mijo.

My most sinceros pesames to your family and friends. I am honored to have had the oppertunity to have spent time with you and of meeting you through Mondo while in California. Those are days I will treasure forever along with the many photos of us all just enjoying life. My God be with your family to aliviate their pain of loss. Meeting you, knowing you and working with you has been a pleasure.
While on my first mission in Afghanistan and hearing what happened to you plunged my mind and heart into pain, anger and disbelief.
We are back at Manus; back from our tour and you haven't left any of us and we think about you and feel you by our sides daily.
Thanks for all the laughs and good times. We miss you beyond words!

SGT Borjas was the first Civil Affairs team SGT I had at the 416th CA BN. He was awesome! I remember the first time I met him. We were both brand new to the unit. It was September of 2007. We had to take an APFT (PT) test. I asked him if he could run fast. He just smiled. Next thing I know he's knocking out 100+ push ups and sit ups and not even sweating! He ended up running the 2 mile in 12:30! Super stud but also a class act. He was a good friend and a great leader. Rico we miss you brother.

I just wanted to give my sympathy to the family of Sgt Borjas. I served with him in Afghanistan and was there the day he died. Sgt Borjas fought bravely and would have done anything to ensure the safety of his fellow troops. He was a great leader and better man. I will never forget him.

I cant say anything different from any of the other posters. But I am glad I had the opprotunity to serve and train next to a superior soldier like SGT Borjas. Always ambitious and saw the positive side of every situation....I miss you to this day brother, and you will never be forgotten!!!!

Today when I came home from work I asked my children if they understood what Memorial Day was all about. My daughter correctly answered to honor those soldiers who died during war. Although she was right I saw there was no personal attachment to the day. I took a few moments to tell them about you Rico. About the Marine, Police Officer, and Soldier you were. And about how proud I am to have served with you as an Officer and SWAT team member. We then took a moment as a family to thank you Rico for your ultimalte sacrifice. This Memorial Day the Cuddy family remembers Sgt Rico Borjas.

I met Rico several years back at a training class. We instantly became friends and continued to keep in contact. I stayed with Rico during training classes in San Diego, and he and Yvette stayed at my house on a few occasions while they visited the LA area. I last saw Rico in June of 2008 when he was in the San Diego PD Honor Guard at a fallen officer benefit motorcycle ride. At that time, Rico told me he was going to be deployed over seas. That was the last time I saw him. A few days ago, while having a random conversation with a San Diego police officer, I learned of Rico's passing. I wish I could have been there to honor Rico and his family at the funeral. Rico was a true brother and a fine American. He will forever be in my heart and on my mind. RIP Brother~ Detective Eric Johnston El Monte Police Department

Rico, I remenber the last time I saw you, it was the night you left to go to your FOB. We gave each other a big bair hug, and I told you, "to be safe." You told me the same. There is not a day goes bye that I don't think of you. At FT. Dix the room we shared, watched movie togather late into the night, and most off all getting to know a great American, you made me a better person and soldier, God bless you and your family RIP.
