Tamayo wanted to be a Marine from the age of 9, when he attended a graduation ceremony and saw his older brother Mario in full Marine dress. His parents were summoned home from another son's wedding in Mexico by a neighbor who told told them that men in military uniforms needed to speak to them.

My condolences to the Tamayo Family. I am a former Marine from Fontana, Ca. I was a Rifleman in the Corps stationed in 29 Palms. I was in Operation Desert Storm back in 1991. I didn't know Fernando but I feel like I did. We had alot in common. It saddens me to hear that he has left us. He is a Marine-a brother to me. He is a Warrior. I hope your family is doing good and remaining strong. Fernando gave the ultimate sacrafice for us. Marine- I can never say thanks enough for what you did and what you stood for. I know how much your family and fellow Marines miss you. I will see you when I get to Heaven. We will stand post together and guard the gates of Heaven.

Hey Bro!!! Remember you and I were going to the Marine test a month before our 2005 Bloomington H.S. granduation? I'm sorry I didn't go with you since I was only 17 and you were already 18, I remember every morning you would walk towards me with your binder up showing me the Marine Corps. Logo with pride. I also remember when you took the test and passed it rubbing it in my face, all you were waiting for was our H.S. Graduation. R.I.P. Bro, I know you loved being a Marine, and you gave your life doing what you loved. I still remember when you and I would mess around and you would say "Pinche Raul!!!" I remember talking to Fernie rarely, but the times we did talk he seemed like a cool guy, someone to look up to. I saw him one time at another persons funeral in his uniform, i thought that was pretty cool and said to myself "I'm going to be like him someday". He would always ask me about my brother Fabian whenever he saw me, because he used to be in the Army. The hardest part of all, however, was when me and my mom were in Mexico City visiting family and got a call that Fernando had passed away. At that point i didnt know who they were talking about and then i finally realized it was him. That was when me and my mom started crying, praying and hoping that everything was going to be okay.
Fernando is not only a Hero to me, but to everyone in the United States.I know Fernie is in a better place now and he will forever be engraved in our hearts.

I remember the first time I met Fernando we were going to school at Bloomington high, I didn't have any friends and he took me under his wing. We became good friends and as I got to no him, I saw that he wanted to be a marine. He used to bring the movie full metal jacket and also platoon all the time to school hoping that one day the teacher would let them watch it in class. Because of this I gave him the nickname of "MARINES". He liked so it stuck. The last time I saw my friend, " MARINES" was outside of target in Fontana, he told me he was going to Iraq, I wished him luck. I miss u " MARINES" u were like a brother to me, I hope to see u again one day, I no god wanted u to protect the gates of heaven, and that's why you left...
