I have no regrets. When you have children, you let them be free to choose whatever they want in life.... For me, I think I'll never be able to recover.
— Mario Tamayo, father
Tamayo wanted to be a Marine from the age of 9, when he attended a graduation ceremony and saw his older brother Mario in full Marine dress. His parents were summoned home from another son's wedding in Mexico by a neighbor who told told them that men in military uniforms needed to speak to them.

There isn't a day that goes by since your passing that we do not think of you. Tears? I don't we have any left in us.Our family has struggled since your loss, but we take solace in the memories that are embetted in us. Mom and Dad miss you so much as do I. You are allways and forever will be in our hearts. Descansa en Paz, hermanito.
R.I.P CUZ I MEMBER WHEN WE PLAYED BASKETBALL AT THE PARK BY YOUR HOUSE AND WHEN YU GAVE ME A RIDE IN YOUR NEW BEAMER MAY YOU REST IN PEACE AN WATCH OVER US CUZ MISS YOU
My condolences to the Tamayo Family. I am a former Marine from Fontana, Ca. I was a Rifleman in the Corps stationed in 29 Palms. I was in Operation Desert Storm back in 1991. I didn't know Fernando but I feel like I did. We had alot in common. It saddens me to hear that he has left us. He is a Marine-a brother to me. He is a Warrior. I hope your family is doing good and remaining strong. Fernando gave the ultimate sacrafice for us. Marine- I can never say thanks enough for what you did and what you stood for. I know how much your family and fellow Marines miss you. I will see you when I get to Heaven. We will stand post together and guard the gates of Heaven.

I wish I knew Fernando or Alex or Marisol or William or Gary or many of you HEROES. I CRY FOR YOU. I ACHE FOR YOUR FAMILIES. I MOURN FOR THE GREAT LOSS THIS COUNTRY WILL FOREVER MISS. I wish I could physically write a tribute for each of you heroes. You are all real not a statistic but a brother, sister, son, daughter, mother, father, dear friend and role model to so many. I just wanted to express the feelings of many of us that not a day goes by that we don't think of you and pray for your safety. My tears will dry but the respect and admiration and LOVE for you will remain. God bless each of you and your families. From just one of millions of Americans who miss you.
AMIGO FER QUE DIOS TE TENGA EN SU SANTA GLORIA, TE RECUERDA UN AMIGO DE IXTLAN DE LOS HERVORES MICHOACÁN. SALUDOS A TUS PAPAS Y HERMANOS A LOS QUE CONSIDERO TAMBIÉN MIS AMIGOS.
IT'S BEEN ALMOST THREE YEARS SINCE YOUR DEATH LITTLE BROTHER. IT FEELS LIKE IT WAS JUST YESTERDAY WHEN I FELT YOUR LAST HUG AS YOU SAID GOODBYE TO ME,YOUR LAST SMILE TO ME AS YOU SAID "DON'T WORRY I'LL COME HOME AGAIN". I DIDN'T
WANT TO LET GO OF THAT MOMENT, NEVER THINKING THAT IT WOULD BE OUR LAST GOODBYE. I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I AM VERY PROUD OF ALL THAT YOU DID, YOU PROVED TO ALL OF US THAT YOU ARE A TRUE MARINE. I WANT TO TAKE THIS TIME TO THANK YOU FOR LOVING ME UNCONDITIONALLY AND GIVING ME THE COURAGE TO CONTINUE ON WITH MY LIFE AFTER YOUR PASSING. YOU ARE MY HERO AND WILL FOREVER BE IN MY HEART. QUE DIOS BENDIGA TU CAMINO POR SIEMPRE QUERIDO FERNIE!
I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL WITH FERNANDO & ALTHOUGH WE ONLY TALKED CASUALLY, I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE DAY I READ IN THE NEWSPAPER OF HIS DEATH. TO THIS DAY, I THINK ABOUT HIM AND THE REST OF THE MEN & WOMEN FROM BLOOMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL WHO HAVE DEDICATED THEIR LIVES TO SUPPORTING THIS COUNTRY. I CONDEMN THE ACTIONS OF THE U.S. MILITARY WAGING WAR IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN. BUT I DO SUPPORT AND RESPECT THE SOLDIERS WHO ARE TRYING TO DO GOOD IN WHAT IS LEFT OF THE MESS MADE BY THE DESTRUCTIONS OF WAR. QUE DIOS SIEMPRE ESTA CON ELLOS. MAY THE TAMAYO FAMILY ONE DAY FIND THEMSELVES AT PEACE IN THE REMEMBRANCE OF FERNANDO.
