Torres attended Millikan High School, but earned his high school diploma from Long Beach School for Adults. When he enlisted, Torres told his family that, if anything happened to him, he wanted them to use his benefits to finally buy a house. His mother told him she would forgo a house if it meant that he would stay alive.
