There are no words to describe him. He was loved by everybody. We will miss his smile, his great sense of humor. He will be truly missed.
— Hilda Rezolorio, sister-in-law, in the Long Beach Press-Telegram
Garcia was married to his high school sweetheart, Lesly, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reported. The couple moved to Italy, where he was stationed, just months after marrying. Lesly was staying with relatives in Long Beach when she got news that Garcia had been killed in Afghanistan when his outpost was attacked by small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. A full obituary will follow.

Dear Family, I'm sorry for your loss. I thank God for the hero Israel was and his decision to fight for the freedom of others. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 tell us:
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. There is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.
Israel has fought the good fight and has finished the race. May he receive the crown of righteousness.
God Bless you all.
NUESTRO MAS SINCERO PESAME A VICTORIANO Y MARICRUZ GARCIA, POR LA MUERTE DE NUESTRO SOBRINO
SIEMPRE SERAS RECORDADO ISRAEL POR LO BUENO Y SENCILLO QUE FUISTE, Y RECUERDEN ERES HEROE NACIONAL
I was blessed enough to have the opportunity to coach Israel in soccer at Poly High School. He was a wonderful young man who knew what he wanted to do with his life. I remember how proud he was when he told me he would be entering the service, and that same pride he had when he visited with me on one of his leaves. My prayers go out to his family. Should we all be so fortunate to have know such a special person.
