Sergeant 1st Class James Grissom, 31, of Hayward, died March 21, 2013, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. Three days earlier, Grissom had been critically wounded by small arms fire in Paktika province, Afghanistan. He was on his fifth overseas deployment and had also served in Iraq. Before enlisting in the Army in 2003, he graduated from the Art Institute of San Francisco with an associate’s degree in computer animation. He is survived by his wife, parents and sister.
