Hill was killed June 11 by small-arms fire in the Narh-e Saraj district of southern Helmand province, near the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah. Hill's father, grandfather and great-grandfather served in the Marines.

We pray for your family for the lose, I heard so many stories about you from my husband. He served right beside you during all of this tradegity. He would say how on down time the two of you would talk on ad on about life and your past, an how it's changed so much. He considered you his best friend over there. They day he lost you I'll never forget hearing the shaken up voice he had and the tears he had for you. Still to this day he tells all these fun and happy stories you two had over there. You've made such an impact on my husband and also on me. I'm so sorry we never got to meet, you sound like such an amazing guy, friend, son and brother. May you rest in peace and always be watching over your family and fellow marines that are still fighting today. Thank you very not only doing what you loved but being a really good friend to my husband! You will never be forgotten.

I performed your funeral ceremony in 2011.

4 years later, I'm writing a book about the whole Marine Corps, and I'm sitting at my computer, trying to recall as many details of the whole memorial as I can.

I remember motorcycles lining the streets as far as I could see. I took you from the funeral home to the Poway Memorial, and from the Memorial to the final resting place.

I even met your brother! He asked to carry you up the hill. There's a lot of symbolism in that; your name is Hill, then climbing the hill, carrying the Hill up the hill. Whatever, it's meta.

Anyway, I want to tell myself, and tell you by telling me, that you're still remembered by a total stranger a thousand miles away. Semper Fidelis
